What is real peace?    What does peace make you think of?

How would you describe peace?     What does peace look like to you?

Okay, do you have a response to what peace looks like to you?

Maybe it’s a mental picture, a word, or a series of words you would use to describe peace.

Maybe this picture would describe your definition or real peace?

Or maybe this one?

In case you missed this Tuesday’s video blog Lessons from the Lake, I also discuss peace and it’s unique definition.  Check it out here by clicking on the picture below:

The Hebrew word for peace is Shalom, which basically means, wholeness and well-being in all areas of life. The Shalom Peace of God speaks of destroying the authority attached to chaos!

Did you catch that?

I almost missed it and brushed past it all these years, until recently when talking with a friend.  We were talking about peace, because I was researching it for a sermon on the fruit of the spirit – Peace.

As we were talking she said, “Peace isn’t peaceful at all. It’s an offensive attack against the enemy!”

The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace. Psalm 29:11 (NIV)

I have learned that my peace, is directly proportionate to my trust. Peace comes from knowing God is in control.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You! (Isaiah 26:3NLT)

I know, it is easier said than done.  Believe me, I know how it feels to not have peace and feel as if the weight and stress of life is crashing in all around.  I know how it feels to have someone tell you to, “Just trust God.” Or “Let it Go.. Let it Go…” and “Let Go and let God.”  There are so many more cliché’s that I could mention right now, but I think you get the picture.

During His time on earth, Jesus restored peace everywhere He went.

One day, after Jesus had been teaching parables to a large crowd, He and the disciples got in a boat to cross to the other side. When suddenly, a huge, furious, raging storm (squall) appeared! The disciples became terrified, all while Jesus calmly slept in the stern of the boat. The disciples woke Jesus up because they were afraid they would drown in the storm

“He got up and ordered the wind to stop. He said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down. And it was completely calm” (Mark 4:39).

God loves to give us word pictures. Calming the raging sea was a picture of what Jesus can do to a person’s heart.

Sometimes people feel stormy inside their hearts. I know I do.

When storms come along, that is when the “what if’s” come into play.  What if I lost my job? What if my spouse lost their job?  What if something happens to my children? What if the doctor gives me bad news? What if I can’t …. ???

What is your ‘what if’ that steals your peace?

The Word of God tells us that God ALWAYS keeps His promises.

The disciples had a “what if” moment in the boat.  What if we don’t make it to the other side?  They felt there were about to drown.  These professional fishermen were so overwhelmed with fear that they didn’t know what to do. They were certain that they were about to drown (die) in the storm. Jesus not only calmed down a huge storm outside, but He also calmed down a huge storm on their insides.  Jesus brought peace to the disciple’s hearts. Jesus had already spoken that they would not drown in the storm, they were going to the other side.

Jesus wants to bring us this kind of inward peace to us as well.  No matter what it looks like, we have to trust His words to us and believe that He will come through

When Jesus was ready to ascend into heaven, He told His followers,

“I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart” (John 14:27 NLT).

This peace stays with us even when we have something upsetting in our lives – like a raging storm, or waves crashing into our life.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid (John 14:27 ESV).

Got Peace?
