“Ever so softly she whispered … “They love me, they love me not.  They love me …. They love me not….” “

Tuesday it was my turn to write for an 8 week collaborative series on Perseverance with 3 of my friends. As I wrote the piece on rejection, I felt more needed to be said.  I mean, when does a writer not have more to say? Hahaha …

I felt prompted  to share tools that have helped me overcome rejection in my life, so that maybe others could overcome it too.

If you missed my post on The Sting of Rejection you can read it HERE:

Overcoming the Sting of Rejection – Part 2

Rejection is a lie and trap from the enemy to keep us all from walking fully in our kingdom destiny.

It wasn’t until my mid 20’s when I realized that I was looking through lenses colored with a spirit of rejection.  It was then I began dealing with rejection and its affects in my own life.

In Tuesday’s post, I compared rejection to dandelion weeds.  I said:

“The roots and seeds of encounters with rejection are very much like dandelions.  Dandelions have roots that twist and turn going very deep into the ground.  When you pluck them, and try to root them out, it seems over time they spring back up.”

In my life, it seemed I would deal with the rejection at hand, and then think it was gone, only to find that it would pop its ugly little head up when I least expected it.  That is when I learned rejection must be dealt with at its root.

Rejection has a way of coloring the way that we see situations and people, and not in a good way.

Without even knowing it, I would often reject people or assess that they would reject me before I even said a word to them. In the spirit, walls would go up around me and my arm would fly out with a ‘talk to the hand motion’.   I would say it didn’t bother me, or chalk it up to their issues, when in reality, the issues where mine.

Once I received healing for some of my childhood rejection issues, my lenses got a little clearer.

When our lenses are clearer, we can see how rejection has affected other relationships in our life.

I have thought about the things that helped me overcome rejection in my own life when it wants to spring back up and take root again.  This by no means is an exhaustive list nor am I saying if you do these things then you will be done.

What I am saying is that each time I had an issue of rejection or a circumstance come about that had roots in rejection, these are some key things I did that helped me to overcome. I pray that as you read them, that you too will be able to find help and relief in implementing one or more of these keys. Below are just a few of the keys that helped me to overcome the sting of rejection.

Keys to Overcome Rejection:

Get help and healing to overcome the hurt.

Don’t isolate yourself and feel you must go it alone. Instead, find trusted people to pray with you, and who are willing to come alongside you.  Then, seek out healing and prayer ministries that can help you identify the root issues and receive healing in the areas God leads you to.

Understand Your Identity in Christ

When rejection comes, and oh it will, we need to know who we are and whose we are.  We need to understand that we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and that He chose us.  We have been given a spiritual inheritance and authority in Jesus Christ, just because we have chosen to be a part of His family.  God is where we need to look for our validation and value. Remember, He is the only one who will not let us down.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9).

Stand on the truth of Scripture

For us to know our identity, we must be in the Word of God.  His Scripture is full of wonderful promises of who we are in Christ.  When rejection comes, and it will, we need to be so secure in our identity that we don’t allow any seeds (lies, rejection, unbelief, etc.) the opportunity to take root.  Take ever thought captive, especially if it’s not a thought God has said about you in His word.  For me, when I need to remember a promise/truth of God, I will write that Scripture out.  I place Scripture all around me – on 3×5 cards, on my mirror, in my car, on the fridge, next to my computer screen, and well just any place I may see it.  I also say those truths out loud and proclaim them over my life so I can hear them.

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes (Ephesians 1:4NLT)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)

Learn to love Yourself

Not in a prideful way, but in an acceptance way. We are so much harder on ourselves than others are, and we often don’t love ourselves.  If we can’t love ourselves, they we will never be able to understand that God loves us nor will we ever be able to fully accept the love of others.  Which are the two greatest commandants.

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself'” (Luke 10:27 NIV).

Trust God

I know, when you have been rejected the last thing you want to do is trust anyone.  I promise, and I said it before, He will never leave you or forsake you.   Not only is God the only one who won’t reject you. He completely understands rejection.

Trust God, He’s bigger than your circumstances and He’s bigger than the way you see yourself.

It’s ok, you can grab the flower and pluck all the petals you want, but the outcome and cry of God’s heart to yours, will always be….

“Oh My Child, I love you!  I really do.  I am for you and not against you.  I am your strong tower, I am your shelter, I am your safe place, your refuge, and your ever-present help in time of need.  Trust Me my precious child, trust me.

Then our hearts will sing in response to Him:  He Loves me …. Oh, How He Loves me!
