Paper, pencils, markers, ruler, tape, scissors, JC Penny catalogs and other magazines were spread across the living room floor.
Plans for future homes and farms which would be side by side were in the making. My friend and I spent hours sketching every detail of our dream homes, horse barns, dog kennels, and more. Everything was meticulously labeled, papers were taped together to make a “blue-print” of our grand designs. Next, we poured over magazines and catalogs to choose furnishings and décor for our homes.
As a little girl, I was creative, care-free, and a fanciful dreamer. I would spend hour upon hour dreaming about what my life would look like when I grew up. That was long before boys, serving God, or the reality and pressures of the real world came crashing in.
Feeling Pressure
The age-old question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” wasn’t really asked in a serious way until I was older, but the question began when I was a young child. My answer then was simple: “A wife, mother, and a writer.” As I grew older, I had the perception, more was expected of me.
I spent a great deal of my life trying to figure out what my “calling” was, let alone trying to figure out how to walk with God through it all. The pressures and demands (actual and perceived) caused me to wander from thing to thing. I became filled with doubt and uncertainty. The pressure only began to ease when I realized God had the answers I was looking for. Letting go of control, I began to trust God, His Word and follow His path.
Three Keys to Walk with God in your Calling
It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.
Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up,
he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living,
part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone
(Ephesians 1:11-12 The Message).
These verses contain three keys to walking with God in our calling.
Key #1 …

Our dreaming and our calling–so beautiful to think that God can take our fondest dreams about our future and fold them into His plans for our investment in His Kingdom! Reminds me of Psalm 139 and the words about how known and designed we are, right from the beginning.
Oh yes, Michele – Psalm 139! It is one of my favorites and you are right, it is beautiful and amazing to watch God take our dreams and turn them into His plans. Thanks for being here today <3
Needed to be reminded that the pressure fades when we let go and let God! I’m in a place of overwhelm and need to give it to Him and trust He’s in control, thank you!
Oh, Michelle, I know that feeling all too well. I will be praying for you. I am glad my pos reminded you of something you needed at this time. Blessings and thanks for being here today!
I was called to be a high school teacher years ago. It was a blessing for over 30 years! I never had to think twice about whether I made a difference in someone’s life or if I somehow missed my calling. I knew!
Laurie, I love it! I am so glad you knew that you knew! Plus what an amazing calling and an important one too. To pour into teenagers for over 30 years! Yes, I am sure you made a difference in more than a few of their lives too. Blessings
Thanks very much, Debbie. Blessings to you.
You are most welcome Boma! Thanks for writing a great piece and for linking up here to 🙂
I am currently in a season of trying to find my place in this life I am living. Nothing seems to feet. Needing good words like this. laurensparks.net
Lauren, I pray that as your search continues that you God will direct your path and you will soon find “the” thing that makes your heart sing. I’ve learned to enjoy the journey along the way and not stress too much about it. 🙂 I am glad my words came at just the right time for you. Thanks for reading the blog and commenting today.
When we relinquish the control we think we have and remember that God is in control anyway, we can rest in His wisdom and be at peace. 🙂 Blessings to you, Debbie!
You are so very right Gayl! God is in control, I wish I would always remember that and not try to control the situation myself. Blessings
Hey Debbie, I’m new here and didn’t realize you had a link up! So happy to hear Boma’s post was the most clicked! She’s a sweetie that I met online several years ago. I loved this from your post:pressures and demands (actual and perceived) – that cause us to wander from one thing to the next. So true!!
Hi Ellen & WELCOME! I am so glad you were able to stop by and I would absolutely love for you to come back and linkup sometime soon. It’s not too late now, the linkup is open through Sunday PM 🙂 I love how small the world is when God connects us online. I love that you know Boma and that you connected with her online. Thanks for being here and I hope to see you again soon. Thank you so much

So very beautiful and really good tips. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for always hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
Thanks Patrick!
There are pages and pages written in my journal from the last 5 or more years asking God what my calling is…my gifts…What do you want me to do with my life Lord? I still have the same questions. Lol! The difference between now and then is I see that He shows me little thing by little thing – in many different areas of my life. I still don’t know the answers to all those questions, but like Moses – If God isn’t going, I don’t want to go. You always inspire me. Thank you for that and for sharing with us at #LiveLifeWell.
Jessica, it is so good that you are still moving ahead, little by little step by step – that is the important thing and oh yes, if God’s not going I’m not going either. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your journey with me here in the comments. Thanks so much. Blessings, and sorry for my delay in responding it has been a crazy week of ministry and speaking
We will most definitely struggle to find our purpose if we do so away from God. Thank you for the reminders to bring our search back to the source – God and His word. We will only find who we are by first finding who we are to Him.
Angela, I so agree with you. The Bible is our foundation and our compass. We need to read it and know what’s in it.
