I adjusted the flow of the water at the kitchen sink as I began cleaning the kitchen after preparing a meal for my father. As I stood there doing a mundane yet necessary job, I heard the Lord whisper to my heart:
“You adjust and direct the flow of the Spirit moving and working through your life.”
I was kind of caught off guard, I wasn’t expecting God to show up and speak to me while I was doing the dishes after a long day of caring for my dad. I was tired and getting ready for bed, I was just finishing my “chores” for the day when out of nowhere God began to speak to me.
“We adjust and direct the flow of the Spirit moving and working through our lives.” Click To Tweet
While my head understood the statement God spoke to me, I knew I was missing something important for Him to speak to me. I realized I needed to be reminded that I can adjust the flow and direct how much or how little He is allowed to move in and through my life. Scripture says:
On the last day, the biggest day of the festival, Jesus stood again and spoke aloud.
Jesus: If any of you is thirsty, come to Me and drink. If you believe in Me, the Hebrew Scriptures say that rivers of living water will flow from within you. Jesus was referring to the realities of life in the Spirit made available to everyone who believes in Him. But the Spirit had not yet arrived because Jesus had not been glorified. (John 7:37-39 The Voice).
The Holy Spirit connects believers to the Father and His Son. So any fear about being disconnected from God may be abandoned; the Creator of the Universe dwells within His people, sustains them, and will accomplish the impossible through them. (Notes in Scripture for John 7:37-39 The Voice). It’s so true, we direct the flow of the Spirit Working in our life. We can become a hinderance and stop up the flow, or we can open it wide and allow Him to move.

This week, I was reminded of not only what the Lord whispered to me back in January, but also a song I sang as a kid in church.
🎶 I’ve got a river of life flowing out of me; It makes the lame to walk and the blind to see. It opens prison doors, sets the captives free. I’ve got a river of life flowing out of me.🎶
We have a river of living water, a river of life flowing out of us. This is also where prophetic encouragement flows from.
This River is from God. It is God, His Holy Spirit, and it is flowing freely in and through us because of the sacrifice of Jesus. This River of Life not only makes the lame walk, the blind see, sets captives free, BUT it is also the River of Life that brings us truth and encouragement straight from the heart of the Father. Encouragement that is meant to refresh and sustain us. But also, encouragement that we can speak to others to bring life, hope and refreshing to their dry souls.
I have a river of life flowing out of me! Click To Tweet
I don’t think I realize how often I stop or hinder the power or fullness of what God wants to do in and through my life, and how He wants to utilize me to bless and encourage others.
How about you?
I want to have the spigot of my life wide open allowing the Spirit complete and unhindered access to flow through me. I want to partner with Him. I want His Spirit dwelling in me to not just sustain me, but to be released to accomplish the impossible and the miraculous and make a difference in the lives of others.
How about you?
In order to make sure the spigot of my life is wide open, I need to pursue God more. I need to spend time with Him and purpose to seek Him out. I need to be more intentional and more aware of how I am shutting down or adjusting the flow of how He moves in my life.
How about you?
Father God, I want Your Spirit to move freely in my life. Show me anything that is hindering, blocking, or stopping You from flowing freely in my life. Help me to adjust the flow as needed so that You can accomplish the impossible through my life. Amen

The spirit of the prophet is subject to the prophet – adjust the flow!
Susan, yes you are so right !
May we give the Spirit a wide stream of freedom to work and flow freely through our words and our actions!
Amen Michele! I pray that I can always give the Spirit a wide stream of freedom to work in my life. 🙂
Amen! What a terrific reminder.
Thank you Michelle.
You’ve challenged me to also consider how I hinder the fullness of what God wants to do in my life. Just listening and being more aware is so important.
Crystal, you are so right. Listening and being more aware is so important and the perfect place to start. Blessings
Your writing is always so inspiring. And I love that song! laurensparks.net
Thank you Lauren. And, I do too, I haven’t sung it or thought about it in years, until this past week…although I always want to add the *Splish – Splash part in the chorus… it’s the way we say it in Sunday School. LOL
Amen! Thanks for this reminder, Debbie. Blessings to you!
you are most welcome Boma!Blessings to you as well.
Beautiful truth! My first thought is “oh, Lord please don’t let me block your flow, Help me to be open to your guidance and keep me thirsty” It is amazing how God brings things together, last night I was reading in Eph 4 where it talks about grieving the Holy Spirit. This just takes that idea a little further. I am thinking God is telling me something. I am usually the person who never starts a day without prayer and Bible reading, and lately I have struggled with it. So I know what He is telling me. God is so good and kind with us. Thank you for being open to His leading. 8)
Debra – I felt the same way – “oh Lord, I don’t want to block your flow every – and help me to see when I do.” God has an amazing way of pulling things together and bringing them to our attention just when we need it. Thank you for being here today, for sharing your thoughts and being transparent. I hope you will be able to join us for the linkup regularly 🙂 Blessings
OOPS! I put a great (and long) comment in but it didn’t like the email I used and wouldn’t let me confirm the subscribe thing. So trying with my other email.
Thanks Debra – I got the other one, it came through on my end. 🙂
Oh I’m with you, Debbie! I want living water flowing through me…never turned down, turned off, or stagnant, or worse, all dried up! Hallelujah!
And thanks so much for highlight my blog post from last week! So kind of you!
Amen & Amen Karen! You are also very welcome for highlighting your blog post from last week, it’s a good one. 🙂

ooooh Marilyn, these all sound good – especially the cheese cake. LOL thanks for linking up
This is so good. We can’t give what we don’t have so leaning in and spending more time with God will provide an overflow. I like the analogy of the spigot and keeping it wide open for the Spirit. Have a great weekend.
Thank you so much Mary. You are so right, we can’t give what we don’t have so we must lean in for more of HIM. Love it. thanks for stopping by and you have a great weekend too.
I, too, want the Spirit of God to fill me to overflowing and have free reign in my life. For Him to lead and not myself. I read a book to my daughter Jordan in pre-k “ABC verses”, I think, and one of the verses was about quenching the Holy Spirit. It was the first time I’d heard that verse, but it stuck with me. How sad it is to think that the one thing we want most we can actually quench – usually without meaning to or even recognizing that we’re doing it. Thanks for sharing your encouragement and wisdom at #LiveLifeWell.
These words, Debbie, brought tears to my eyes. “I want His Spirit dwelling in me to not just sustain me, but to be released to accomplish the impossible and the miraculous and make a difference in the lives of others. ” Yes and Amen!
I especially love the simple prayer at the end of this post.
Thank you, Debbie, for such a great post! This is such a wonderful reminder and lesson for us all. I am so very thankful that the Holy Spirit is with us all the time, that God is always close! I want so much more of God. This is what I am working on this year. It is a journey that we should all work toward. #Relationship
