Welcome to my new blog series on Psalm 23. I hope you will join me each week and join in the conversation as I break Psalm 23 down verse by verse.
At the beginning of the year, I released a prophetic word of encouragement the Lord gave me for 2021. At the end of it, He spoke this to me:
“…The Lord then showed me a beautiful picture of rich, lush green rolling hills with a stream flowing gently down. “Lord, what is this? Why are you showing me this?” I asked.
I had an overwhelming sense of rest and peace. Then I heard the Lord say, “Psalm 23”
“Yes, Lord, but what specifically about Psalm 23?”
This was His reply:
For in this season of 2021, I will teach My church what it really means to be and live as a Psalm 23 people. Not just one verse or a part of, but the entire portion of Scripture.
For I the Lord Am the Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11). I Am the Lion of Judah (rev 5:5). I AM the Lamb who was slain for you(Jn 1:29), and I AM the Resurrected King (Jn 11:25) who will return for you! …”
If you would like to read the word in its entirety you can read it here:
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known passages of the Bible, many quote it, or recite it by wrote, but do we really know what it means to “be and live as a Psalm 23 people”?
As I have been contemplating what it means to be and live as Psalm 23, I realized that there are portions that we may quote or cling to at different times, but some we may gloss over or skip past for various reasons.
For me, I often gloss over the last part of verse 4: “your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” I mean, what is so comforting about a rod and staff? And then there is first portion of verse 5: “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” Who wants to sit and eat with the enemy? Yet, I know these are important verses to understand the entirety of the Psalm 23 message.
Psalms is a book I turn to when I need to find my voice and find words for what I am going through. Whether it be a season of discouragement, despair, or one of needing provision, comfort, and strength Psalms delivers. When we read the book of Psalms, we get a glimpse into the heart of God and of His nature and character.
Psalm 23 promises that God will be with us, comfort and guide us in the midst of every life circumstance!
This Psalm is familiar to many of us, and the image of the Lord as our shepherd is a familiar one. However, there may be things hidden in the 23rd Psalm we might have overlooked.
How about you? Are there portions of Psalm 23 you skip or gloss over?
What do you think it means to live and be a Psalm 23 person?

This is good, because Psalm 23 gets so much shallow usage that I, at times, have stopped hearing it.
Michele – I agree – when you hear something so often or the same verbiage/commentary around something after a while you tend to tune it out. I don’t want to do that with Psalm 23 or any Scripture for that matter. 🙂
Psalm 23 is such a gift. I did a great study by The Daily Grace Co that helped me understand it so well.
Rebecca, it is a gift. I am so happy to hear others have done studies on Psalm 23. I honestly have not and hadn’t heard of any before this either. Thanks for sharing about the Daily Grace Co – I will have to look into their study.
Psalm 23 represents to me one who is completely following, obeying, and trusting in God’s love and grace.
Susan, that is so good! I like what it represents to you and I would wholeheartedly agree!
Our church recently did a series on Psalm 23 that I found so helpful. I have done a lot of hanging out in v. 6.
Lauren, so glad your church recently did a study on Psalm 23 – is so rich. Thanks for sharing which verse has been where you have been spending time as of late. What a place to be – having God’s goodness, bless and favor as you dwell with Him!
I can’t wait to read your series. 🙂
Thanks Janis. 🙂
Dear Debbie, thank you for leading us through Psalm 23; I look forward to learning more about God’s message(s) for us! I usually stop at the very first verse and draw comfort. Your question has prompted me to consider “goodness and mercy following (me) all the days of (my) life”. Wow, that’s so powerful! As Christ-followers isn’t that exactly what we aspire to? Can’t wait to hear how the Lord has spoken to you through that verse in particular. Thanks and blessings!
Hello Alice! Thanks for joining me as we journey through Psalm 23. 🙂 And yes, as Christ followers – verse 6 is exactly where we want to be and aspire too. Although, for some, it isn’t always that easy to accept.
I am excited to journey through Psalm 23 together!
Thanks Elizabeth! I am excited to have you on the journey with me!
