My #OneWord2020
Do you choose #OneWord for your year?
Or maybe you choose a Scripture?
Or maybe you choose a phrase, or nothing at all?
I would love for you to share with me in the comments what you do and what God has been speaking to you regarding this coming year.
This will be my 5th year participating in the #OneWord movement. I have participated in choosing one, single solitary word to guide my year. Not a word of my choosing, but God’s.
My past words have been:
- 2019 – Miracle
- 2018 – Vision
- 2017 – Dwell
- 2016 – Advance
My #OneWord for 2020 is … Dream!
This year, I hadn’t even begun praying over what my #OneWord2020 should be. I wasn’t even ready to start asking God for it, when He dropped it in my heart. In fact, back in November, long before I would normally begin asking God what my word for the coming year should be, He interrupted me. I was sitting at my desk working on my book’s companion Bible Study when a thought popped into my head.
“It’s time to Dream! So, Start dreaming again.”
I stopped what I was doing and looked up from my computer where I have a bunch of nick-knack type items and along with my peacock and Toy Story little green alien collection is the word “Dream.” I picked it up at Home Goods in the office supply section a few years ago. It’s a beautiful wooden scroll-work cut-out of the word dream. It was my inspiration and reminder that dreams still come true. I picked it up right after I signed the contract with Chosen Books for my first traditionally published book deal.
“Huh,” I thought to myself, that’s interesting. I jotted it down in my notes section and went back to writing.
It seemed over the next 6-weeks everywhere I went, this word “Dream” kept popping up. I couldn’t escape it or get away from it. I finally relented and in exasperation told God, “OK!” I get it – you want me to dream in 2020, but not just dream, but dream again.
Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was going to choose #oneword for 2020, because last year’s word didn’t seem to pan out like I had hoped. Sure, I saw some miracles, but the ones I was really believing for didn’t come to fruition. After my aunt and then one of our close friends died from cancer within a few weeks of each other, I still believed. I kept holding the line in belief that my dad would be the “miracle” I would see in 2019. Well, he did receive his heavenly promotion and his eternal healing but not his physical healing here on earth.
I was discouraged and my hope a little shaky, but I figured, I would “battle on” contending for miracles. We’ve seen several people at church receive healing over the past year and I know 2020 we will see more. I just assumed, I would ride the waves of grief, heal my heart and hope would again soar. I fully intended to bring last year’s word in 2020. After all, God works in seasons, and He is not tied to the calendar year. So, when the word “dream” dropped into my head and heart, I was a little surprised.
Last week, I shared the Prophetic Word of Encouragement for 2020 that I received: 2020, A Year of Expansion & A year of Double! if you missed it, you can check it out here:
I am excited to not only dream with God in 2020, but to dream again. Truthfully, it has been a while since I allowed myself to dream at all. Sure, I made plans, safe ones, ones that were easy to obtain in my own strength, but when you dream with God…well, they are God sized dreams. Dreams that only HE can bring to pass.
These are the verses God gave me to go with my word “Dream” for this year:
The lovers of God who chase after righteousness will find all their dreams come true: an abundant life drenched with favor and a fountain that overflows with satisfaction (Proverbs 21:21 TPT).
Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you (Ephesians 3:20 TPT).
The Eternal will finish what He started in me.
Your faithful love, O Eternal One, lasts forever;
do not give up on what Your hands have made (Psalm 138:8 The Voice).
We have become his poetry, a re-created people that will fulfill the destiny he has given each of us, for we are joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. Even before we were born, God planned in advance our destiny and the good works we would do to fulfill it! (Ephesians 2:10 TPT).

With God all things are possible! Amen to dreaming again! Many blessings on your year, Debbie! Thanks for sharing.
Yes, Boma! Amen, with God ALL things are indeed possible. Thanks for being here this week to link up.
Yes, lets pay attention to our dreams and let God give us hopes and plans that prove to us that even our wildest dreams are simply not wild enough!
Oh, Michele, I always love how you use words! You are such a great writer and encourager. I am honored to have you link up each week. Blessings
Deb, in 1999 on a mission trip to Cuba, I asked the Lord to show me the miracle of someone being raised from the dead. I believed He would show me. It didn’t come to pass. In 2002, I stood alone over the casket of my daughter’s fiance and laid hands on his dead body and prayed the prayer – I fully expected him to sit up in that wooden box. He didn’t. But the miracles still happened. I learned the fiance knew Jesus and in Cuba? The miracle had already happened when I delivered (through customs and all) a wheelchair for my daughter’s in law grandma in Cuba – because of my obedience, her father was born anew and is now in heaven (he couldn’t get over the fact that I would be willing to risk my safety to take that new wheelchair to his invalid Mom in communist Cuba). Our miracles don’t always look like His. But in the end, when we are in our eternal home, we will look around and realize, *He did it! He raised us all to new life!* Praise His Name forever. We are not without HOPE. So, sister, DREAM. DREAM big and bold.
My oneword2020 is ABUNDANCE (Isaiah 55) xoxo
I love this testimony Susan!!!! Wow! I mean, only God could orchestrate all those details across several years. Thank you for sharing this, and for risking to obey the Lord. You are such an encourager and I love how you always speak(and write) life. Thanks for giving and speaking courage to have Hope and to Dream Big and Bold! 🙂 I like your 2020 one word too! Abundance is a good one, and Is 55 is too. Blessings
Debbie, I really enjoyed reading your post about your #oneword. It seems that God has some big plans for you in the coming year and He needs you to believe that your dreams will come true. My #oneword came to me in 2019 also. It was during a very difficult time in my life and I felt my joy slipping away from me. God placed it on my heart, to find true joy in Him and him alone, not in my circumstances. In 2020 I want to cultivate as much joy as I can in my life.
Hi Angela, thank you. I am trusting and believing God does have big plans. I love that your word for this year is JOY! What a perfect work for coming out of a difficult season. Much love and blessings to you. Thanks for sharing how and when you got your word for 2020. I always find it interesting how God speaks ton each of us and how we receive our words.
Keep dreaming of ways to spread the kingdom message.
Thanks Lauren, You too!
I love how God speaks to us when we least expect it. My word for 2020 is ACCOMPLISH. “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands! Psalm 90:17, ” And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago; 11 but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may be a completion out of what you have.” II Corinthians 8:10-11. God planted a book in my spirit years ago. I have procrastinated way to long, making excuses. No longer. God says, complete what you desired to do a year ago. In my case, year(s) ago. Pray for me.
Calvonia, I love how God does it that too. Oh, I like that verse from Psalm 90:17 and your word Accomplish goes with it perfectly. I am so glad you aren’t going to procrastinate any longer, but you are going to go for it! This is your year. Keep going. Blessings and prayer!
Dream is an exciting word to choose, Debbie! It will be fun to watch how God uses it in your life (and our lives) this year. I have chosen Linger, or rather God chose Linger for me. 🙂
Lisa, it is indeed an exciting word to have for the year. I was a little apprehensive about it, but now I have an excitement. I like your word too. Linger, so many possibilities and the one that comes to mind is slowing down and enjoying the things in front of you. I like how God chooses words for us that we might not choose for ourselves, but they are exactly what we need. <3 Blessings
I’m encouraged by your honesty of struggle during the difficulties life of this past season. Sometimes knowing I’m not alone in my wrestlings with God is a comfort!
Thank you Elizabeth. Authenticity is something I strive for, even with my online presence. I want to be as honest and yet encouraging as possible to others, so they know they are not alone.
Hi Debbie. I believe God gave you “dream” because you need it after all of the struggles and heartache last year. It will be exciting to see how He uses it during the next twelve months.
The word God gave me is “perseverance” along with James 1:2-4. It’s not a particularly warm and fuzzy word, but I’m trusting Him to lead me.
Peace and grace,
Tammy
Tammy, I believe you are right! This past year has been filled with a lot of struggles and heartache. Too many, in my book. I like how you are trusting God with your word, even though it doesn’t give you the warm fuzzies. Perseverance is a strong, bold word. I look forward to seeing how it will play out for you this year as well. Blessings
I love that word. Very nice. Such a power word. Thanks for sharing it. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
Thanks Patrick. You are most welcome, I pray you had an awesome week yourself!
