I am a dreamer, figuratively and literally. I was always the kid in school daydreaming about the next story, poem, or picture I would create. I was also a vivid dreamer. I had vivid, detailed dreams in color! I would even have multiple dreams in the same night. I always thought it was cool, and I didn’t really think too much about my dreams other than to use them as material for story lines. Then that all changed, and I began to understand that God could speak to us through our dreams.

When I began to understand God could use dreams to speak to us, I used to joke that dreams were the main way God communicated with me because it was the only time I was quiet, and He could get me to listen. Well, He must have had a good laugh about that one and said, “Oh Really? Watch This!” The dreams promptly dried up for a season, and God began to show me He was speaking in others ways, and I had missed Him because I was simply too busy or too distracted to see it.

Welcome to part 3 of a 5 part series on dreams. Last week, I shared on Dreams part 2 – Who’s the Source? And before that, Dreams – Part 1 – A Basic Understanding of how God can communicate to us through the avenue of dreams.

Maybe you are like I was, and you are really unsure and kind of skeptical about God speaking to us today through the avenue of dreams. If so, that is ok. I was there once, too. After I received some teaching on dreams, I felt as if I had one foot in each camp: The “It’s totally awesome that God speaks to us through our dreams camp”, and the “This is crazy – God doesn’t speak through dreams.”

bike - dreams part 3

Then, as I was listening to a sermon on tape (Yep, I’m totally dating myself) … from a long ago southern preacher who I can’t even remember his name. I’m sure he has long gone on to be with the Lord, but he made a statement. This is not a direct quote, but he said:

“Think of God’s communication like a bicycle wheel. You have a wheel, now Jesus is at the center and is the hub of wheel. Then you have individual spokes coming off the hub of the wheel connected to the outside wheel. The spokes represent God’s communication to us.  Picking and choosing specific spokes to remove is like selecting scripture to ignore.  When we do that we weaken the entire wheel.”

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

If we say God can’t or doesn’t use angels, donkeys, dreams, or any other supernatural way to speak to us, then we pull those spokes out of the wheel and the wheel is not as strong. Who am I to dictate the way God can communicate with me? I’m a nobody that God has made a somebody because of His love for me; if He chooses to speak to me through a donkey, I will listen.

The last few weeks as I have been sharing on dreams, I hope that I have pointed you towards the Scriptures and got you hungry enough to begin talking to God about them. There are a few final thoughts I would like to leave you with pertaining to dreams.

Lines up with Scripture

If you are serious and want to receive dreams or visions from God, then ask. He is a good Father and gives good gifts. Also, one of the things I always tell people is to be willing to record your dreams.

Recording Visions and Dreams[1]

Like a dream he flies away, no more to be found, banished like a vision of the night (Job 20:8).

While it is not necessary for you to record, journal, or write out all or any of the visions and dreams you receive, it is strongly recommended. Job explains to us why this is. Our memory is fleeting; it flies away when we least expect it or want it to.

It has been my personal experience that if I do not record things of a spiritual nature, then I often forget them or cannot accurately recall them. The same is true of visions and dreams, especially since they are more in-depth and often require interpretation and the use of symbolism to get the truths revealed.

“Write the vision on a billboard, large and clear, so that anyone can read it with a glance (or while running) and rush to tell others. But these things won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not delay. Behold, he whose soul is not upright in Him shall fail, but the righteous will live by his faith” (Habakkuk 2:2-4).

“Take a scroll and write on it all the words which I have spoken to you concerning Israel and concerning Judah, and concerning all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day” (Jeremiah 36:2).

“Therefore write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after these things” (Revelation 1:19).

God often asked His people to write things out so they would be remembered. His people could look back on them, read them, and see and experience them as if they were just spoken or had just happened.[2]

If we want to interpret, remember, or review messages God gives to us through the avenue of visions and dreams, then we must be willing to write them down.

I hope that no matter what side of the fence you are on pertaining to dreams, that you will earnestly seek God. Look to Him, ask Him your questions, and share your thoughts. I promise He will respond and show you the truth. He is the one we need to seek after. He is the One who wants to speak to us. He is longing for a deeper relationship with each one of us.

Next week, I will continue my 5 Part Dream Series by talking about symbolism and finish the following week with part 5 on interpretation. Which are keys to unlock Gods powerful tool of communication via dreams and visions.
