Dressed for Battle

Finally, brothers and sisters, draw your strength and might from God. ¹¹ Put on the full armor of God to protect yourselves from the devil and his evil schemes. ¹² We’re not waging war against enemies of flesh and blood alone. No, this fight is against tyrants, against authorities, against supernatural powers and demon princes that slither in the darkness of this world, and against wicked spiritual armies that lurk about in heavenly places.

¹³ And this is why you need to be head-to-toe in the full armor of God: so you can resist during these evil days and be fully prepared to hold your ground. ¹⁴ Yes, stand—truth banded around your waist, righteousness as your chest plate, ¹⁵ and feet protected in preparation to proclaim the good news of peace. ¹⁶ Don’t forget to raise the shield of faith above all else, so you will be able to extinguish flaming spears hurled at you from the wicked one. ¹⁷ Take also the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

<Paul knows that the real battles and dangers we face are not against flesh and blood. The enemies we see are real enough, but they are animated by spiritual forces of darkness that stay strategically hidden from view. These powers often reveal themselves in institutional evils—genocide, terror, tyranny, and oppression—but the weapons needed to combat them are not earthly weapons at all. What is needed, Paul advises, is to stand firm in God’s power and to suit up in the full armor of God. Although the devil and his demon armies are destined for destruction, they are serious threats now and must be resisted and beaten back. For Paul, the best offensive weapons we have are the word of God and prayer.>

¹⁸ Pray always. Pray in the Spirit. Pray about everything in every way you know how! And keeping all this in mind, pray on behalf of God’s people. Keep on praying feverishly, and be on the lookout until evil has been stayed (Ephesians 6:10-18 The Voice).

Paul outlines, not only what spiritual warfare is, but how we must prepare ourselves and dress for war.  How do I know war is inevitable?  Because, Paul says, we must put on the FULL Armor of God so that when the day of evil comes.  Paul doesn’t say “if”, he says, “WHEN.”  When it comes.

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand (Ephesians 6:13 ESV).

As a young kid in Sunday School, we had lessons on the Armor of God, but we didn’t really talk about spiritual warfare or any aspect of why exactly God had given us spiritual armor. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I came to understand that spiritual warfare was a real thing. I came to understand that I have a real enemy who is seeking to destroy me. Not everything bad that happens is spiritual warfare, but sometimes it is. God knew what we would be facing in our daily lives, and He knew that we need to be dressed and prepared for the battles we would face.

Paul was in prison when he was writing his letter to the Ephesians, so he saw soldiers on a daily basis.  One of the ways God likes to speak to His people is to take something we are familiar with and use it to highlight new revelation and add new layers and dimensions to how we view things. That is why Jesus told parables. He used word pictures, something people could relate to, and then Jesus add additional spiritual dimension and poured out new revelation.

Being in prison Paul would see and interact with soldiers every day and God used Paul’s situation, circumstance and surroundings to give him a new revelation of the parallel reality of the spiritual and natural realms.

It has to me. Much like the post from last week, Truth Matters.  I felt God whisper something to me that I thought I already knew. The Armor of God

There are seven pieces of armor that Paul discusses as integral to our success as we face our enemy, not a natural enemy but a spiritual adversary. The seven pieces of armor can be put into three categories. They are: offensive, defensive, and neutral.

• We have three pieces of Offensive armor: Shoes, Sword, & Lance (prayer). These three weapons give us the ability to enforce and demonstrate God’s power and secure the enemy’s defeat.

• We have three pieces of Defensive armor: The Breastplate, Shield & Helmet. These three protect us and give us a confidence assurance that we can defend ourselves if and when needed.

• We have one neutral piece of armor: The Lion Belt (Word of God). The loin belt is vital and a central piece of armor. It’s the piece of armor that holds everything together. The lion belt is the Word of God. The Word of God is vital to our faith, our Christian walk, and the foundation beneath us. Without the Word of God (loin belt) the other pieces of armor cannot function or be held securely in place!

All seven pieces of the armor are important to the believer. Without one of the offensive pieces in place we would be open and susceptible to attacks. Without one of our defensive pieces of armor, we would not be able to fully protect ourselves, and finally we need the neutral piece. In fact, in some ways, if we don’t have the loin belt, the neutral piece, then both the offensive and defensive pieces of armor would be in danger of not being securely held in place, therefore not able to do their job.
