Welcome!
Thank you for joining me each week as we continue our journey through Psalms 23. It is one of the most well-known Scriptures. Many quote it or recite it by wrote, but have we taken the time to dive into the depth and richness found in these six short verses? Do we know what it means to live and be a Psalm 23 people?

Dwelling with God
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever. (Psalm 23:6 NIV)
“Dwight L. Moody, a noted evangelist of the nineteenth century, was once approached by a woman who needed counseling. Two men, she claimed, were following her. Whenever she stepped onto the city trolley, they stepped onto it behind her. When she stepped off, they stepped off. With a nervous twitch in her neck, she insisted that she had even been followed to his office by these very two men.
Moody could easily detect that this precious woman was suffering from a mental delusion. There was no one following her. But to put her at ease, he told her: “Those two men following you are David’s men. Their names are Goodness and Mercy.” He turned in the Bible to Psalm 23:6 and showed her, “Surely goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life.” She was relieved and exclaimed: “That is wonderful. I have always wondered what their names are.” The woman left that day with peace of mind, comforted to know that it was goodness and mercy that were following her.”[1]
While we may get a good laugh at Dwight’s explanation and this woman’s response, as believers it is a great reminder for us that God is with us and watching out for us. Not only that, but as The Voice translation says:
Certainly Your faithful protection and loving provision will pursue me
where I go, always, everywhere.
I will always be with the Eternal,
in Your house forever. (Psalm 23:6 The Voice)
God is always with us, everywhere we go. He is our Shepherd and our friend. He faithfully, lovingly, and protectively leads us, guides us, and pursues us. Why? Because that is who He is. God is good and His love endures forever. I am sure you have heard the phrase: “God is good … and all the time God is good”? Even when things around us don’t seem good, God is. We can be confident of His goodness and His love and we need not fear.
So why would I fear the future?
Only goodness and tender love pursue me all the days of my life.
Then afterward, when my life is through,
I’ll return to your glorious presence to be forever with you! (Psalm 23:6 TPT)
With God on our side, we need not fear but embrace His goodness and receive His love for us. We need not fear the future, in fact Proverbs 31:25 tells us we can laugh at our future without the need for fear. This is what David understood as he wrote Psalm 23. No matter what happens in our lives, God is a good and even in our mess(sin) He chases after us.
Your beauty and love chase after me
every day of my life.
I’m back home in the house of God
for the rest of my life. (Psalm 23:6 The Message)
Yes, every day we are being chased by the goodness and love of God. At times it may not feel like it, but we must remember that God takes what the enemy meant for evil and He turns it for good. Yes, God redeems things in our lives that we would rather forget or tuck away.
The song Reckless Love by Cory Asbury fits so perfectly with Psalms 23 (see YouTube video below). God is relentless in His pursuit of us. He will leave the 99 and go after the one. At one time, we are all the ONE He has pursued.
There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me
Nothing can stop God from coming after us.
Certainly goodness and faithfulness will follow me all the days of my life,
And my dwelling will be in the house of the Lord forever. (Psalm 23:6 NASB)
It’s not just about God’s goodness, love, and faithfulness following us all the days of our lives. There’s so much more. The more is that we can DWELL with God in His house forever. Yes, all the days of our life, through all its changes, its ups and downs, and every situation in between until we die, God is there.
Then afterward, when my life is through,
I’ll return to your glorious presence to be forever with you! (Psalm 23:6b TPT).
And even upon when our earthly life comes to a close, then He will still be there. As believers in Jesus Christ, we will be dwell in the house of the Lord forever and ever and ever.
The Hebrew word yashab means: to sit, to remain, to stay, to dwell, to abide.
In John 15 Jesus shares about what it really means to “abide” when he shares about the vine and branches.
One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple. Psalm 27:4
Psalm 27:4 has long been a cry of my heart. I want to seek God. I want to gaze upon Him and seek His face all the days I am alive. Upon doing so will lead to me remaining and dwelling with Him forever when I am gone from this earth.
Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life,
and I will live in the house of the Lord
forever. (Psalm 23:6 NLT)

I’ve loved your series on Psalm 23, Debbie!
I enjoy comparing the different translations. I find each one emphasizes something a little differently. It always seems to line up with what I’m currently needing to hear!
Verse 6 especially speaks to me. In 2019, the Lord challenged me to live as though I really believed mercy and goodness were chasing me down.
And they are!
I wrote about this verse not so long ago! And I love that song.
The truth that God pursues us with His mercy and lovingkindness is so amazing.
