The Armor of God ~ Feet of Peace

… and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15).

Paul tells us that our feet are weapons of warfare and that they are tied to peace.

But how is this even possible and why is peace so important?

Our feet are what we use to stand on and also what we use to carry us from location to location could. Our feet can easily be compared to a foundation. Peace needs to be a part of the foundation which we step out in and stand upon.

A Roman soldier’s shoes were not what we would think of as ordinary shoes. No, they were not cowboy boots, rain boots, riding boots, army boots, hiking boots or anything in between. They were commonly made out of brass or bronze, but some commentators say brass was commonly used. The soldiers shoe was made of two pieces: the shoe itself and something called a “greave.” The greave was a tube-like piece that fit over the leg from the top of the knee down past the lower leg. It was form fitted to the soldier to go around their calf and provide protection. It was usually beautifully tooled metal and caused the soldiers shoes to look like boots that were made of brass or bronze.

The shoe part was called a “Caligae” (Calcei) and it had spikes or textured soles. It doesn’t sound comfortable, but in actuality they were. Not only would the textured soles provide comfort, but they were a breathable structure that allowed the soldiers to march several miles without pain. The spikes would help a soldier stand their ground and stomp on the fallen enemy. A soldier’s shoes were deadly to the enemy and were indeed weapons of war in and of themselves. The spikes could have been anywhere from one to three inches long. I definitely would not want to be on the receiving end of a soldier’s spiked shoe, would you?

When I think about this piece of armor, it strikes me odd to think of a shoe as a deadly weapon of warfare, a dangerous one in fact. However, Paul says this piece of the armor is to bear peace.

What?

Rick Renner in his book “Dressed to Kill” says:

According to Paul, “peace’ is an awesome weapon, both defensive and offensive. Peace not only protects you, but it also provides you with a brutal weapon to wield against the enemy when he attacks.”

Wow, does that give a brutal visual image or what?

I am sure most of us do not think about our feet as being weapons, let alone brutal ones. But one good kick can hurt someone.  Add to that kick, the protection and weapons of spikes and metal, and well, you have a deadly combination to bring your opponent down.

What is Peace?

Peace isn’t the absence of chaos, but it is learning to be still, calm, and trust God in the midst of it.

The Hebrew word for peace is Shalom, which basically means, wholeness and well-being in all areas of life. The Shalom Peace of God speaks of destroying the authority attached to chaos!

Did you catch that?

I almost missed it and brushed past it for years, until about three years ago when I was talking with a friend.  We were talking about peace, because I was doing research for a sermon on the fruit of the spirit – Peace.

As we were talking, she said, “Peace isn’t peaceful at all. It’s an offensive attack against the enemy!”

The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace. Psalm 29:11 (NIV)

Feet of Peace

Soldiers would bind their shoes tightly to the bottom of their feet with leather straps so that they would stay in place. Some Bible version say we are to “fit” peace to our feet, other versions use the word “shod.” Both in fact mean we are to firmly position and tie peace into place and wrap peace around our feet and our lives.  When we have peace firmly in place, we are ready to face whatever comes our way. Once peace is wrapped around our feet, we can use the weapon of peace and put the enemy under our feet, indeed crushing him.

I have learned that my peace, is directly proportionate to my trust. Peace comes from knowing God is in control.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You! (Isaiah 26:3NLT)

When peace has solid place and a firm fit in our life, then we are ready for action. We can step out confidently knowing we are prepared to face what comes. When peace is firmly in place, we can trust God and not be moved by what we see or hear unless it comes from Him. Attach peace securely not just to your life, but strap it tightly to your feet.
