Dreamers Series

I looked at the caller ID on my phone and groaned loudly.  “Ugh, Not again, I wonder what she wants this time?” ” I said.

My husband overheard my frustrated complaining and asked who I was avoiding.

I shared who it was and went on to say, “I only hear from here when she needs me to help her solve a problem, when she wants an encouraging word, or for me to interpret a dream.  She’s not a real friend.  She never calls to chat, get together or even check on me.  She only calls when she needs something from me.  It’s frustrating. It seems that I am only good enough for her when I can do something for her. The rest of the time she forgets about me and even then, she never thanks me or really appreciates the help I do give her.”

Do you ever feel like you’re not appreciated or valued, except when you use your gifts and talents to help others out?

I think Joseph knew what it feels like.

I can only imagine what he must’ve felt like when he was forgotten and still in prison two years later after giving of himself and his gifting to help out the cupbearer.

1Two years later, Pharaoh had a dream…

In the morning he felt uneasy, so he sent for all of the magicians and all of the wise men of Egypt to come and consult with him. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him. They had no idea what they could mean. The chief cupbearer remembered Joseph, so he went to Pharaoh.

Cupbearer: I am reminded today of something I did wrong….

14 Pharaoh sent for Joseph, hoping he could also interpret Pharaoh’s dream. His officers rushed to the dungeon to get Joseph ready to meet the king. After he had been allowed to shave and change his clothes, he was brought before Pharaoh.

Pharaoh (to Joseph): 15 I’ve had a dream, and I can’t find anyone who can tell me what it means. But I’ve heard that when someone tells you a dream, you are able to interpret it.

 (Genesis 41: 1; 8-9; 14-15 The Voice)

Joseph spends another two years in prison after he interprets the baker and cupbearers’ dreams.  Even though Joseph asks the cupbearer to remember him, he does not. It’s funny to me how all of a sudden, the cupbearer remembers Joseph when it would benefit him the most in Pharaoh’s eyes. Joseph apparently needed more character development and had a few more lessons to learn. I know ultimately, it was part of God’s bigger plan to keep Joseph in prison a little longer.

Pharaoh’s dream is alarming.  It leaves him feeling anxious with no one to help him out.  God finally has the cupbearer remember Joseph and he even repents for forgetting about him. Joseph is finally getting out of prison and his destination is the palace.  Wow, what a journey he has been on so far, but it’s not even close to being over with.  Not only does he get out of prison, but he is cleaned up and made presentable to go before the king.  He gets to shave, bathe and change his clothes. Joseph has lost two robes prior to this and now one is being restored to him. I can imagine him shouting “Free at last! Free at last, thank God almighty I am free at last!”

What else must he must be thinking?  If it was me, it might have been something like this:  “Finally, I am being set free!  My false imprisonment days are over. I am going to be exonerated and my reputation will be restored!”  Yes, Joseph was being restored, but I am not so sure he knew all God had in store for him.  Joseph was not just being restored; he was being promoted!

As we continue to read this passage of Scripture, we see a different side to Joseph than before. Before Joseph took for granted his gifts of receiving and interpreting dreams.  Before he was an arrogant, prideful spoiled tattle-tail of a young man.  The time he spent in the pit, as a slave, and in prison taught him what it means to have true humility. The pre-prison Joseph might have immediately begged for his release from false imprisonment, but instead approached Pharaoh with dignity, respect and faith that acknowledged God.

Joseph:  I cannot do this, but God will answer Pharaoh’s request and relieve your concerns (Genesis 41:16 The Voice).

True humility recognizes that we are nothing apart from God.  Joseph knows the ability to interpret dreams is a gift bestowed to him by God.  He knows it’s not his gift alone.  He knows that the gift is an asset that brings him favor and promotion.  He used this gift in the past to glorify himself causing his brothers to hate him even more and it led him to the pit.

Joseph (to Pharaoh): Pharaoh’s dreams are one and the same. God is revealing to Pharaoh what He is going to do (Genesis 41:25 The Voice).

Why is God revealing His plans for years of abundance and years of famine to a pagan King?

God’s plan was to use Joseph to save two nations from famine and to restore a dysfunctional family.  It has taken years for Joseph to go from the pit to the palace, but he finally has matured and is ready to step into the destiny God has been preparing him for.

It was Joseph’s dreams that landed him in the pit that led to the prison, but now it was coming full circle and it would be his ability to interpret dreams that delivered him from prison to the palace.

God has a destiny He is preparing us for too.  Our job is to trust Him and submit to the process. Allow Him to mature us and grow our character and we will be delivered from our pits and prisons and be ushered into the palace.
