Hello?
Is anyone there?
God, can you hear me? Hello?…
No response just crickets….Yep, nothing but the still silence of the night and me speaking, then shouting, and finally screaming in hopes that God can and will hear me.
God, are you there? Are you even hearing me? Can you hear me now?
The images of the Verizon commercial come to mind when I think of how I used to view communication with God. You know the ‘Can you hear me now’ commercial?
The commercial goes something like this: Man pops up out of a manhole and says into his cellphone, “Can you hear me now?” man nods his head and says, “Good!” Then again, he asks the same question but he is in some remote off the beaten path location. Over and over he asks the same question in a different location and gets the same response… “Can you hear me now? Good.”
It may seem strange to some, but most of my growing up years in the church, I didn’t know that God still spoke today. I didn’t understand that God wanted a relationship with a two-way conversation. I didn’t realize that we could speak to God just like we do with our friends or family and that He would respond.
What I thought before, seems kind of silly to me now. I figured God was busy. He was up in Heaven somewhere doing His God thing. So, when I prayed, He would eventually get around to answering it with a Yes, No, or Maybe, and I just had to wait for Him to eventually decide.
One revelation from God can change everything. First, came the revelation that God still speaks today. Then came the revelation that He wasn’t distant, but that He wanted to have a personal relationship with me. A personal relationship, which involves a two-way conversation, and that is just the beginning!
In Matthew 4:4 Jesus says, “It is written, Man shall not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (ESV). I always took this verse to mean, that we needed to not just give our bodies natural substance of food, but that we needed to read the Word of God too. While that is the absolute truth, I was still missing something. The ‘something’ I was missing was that God communicates today not just through His Holy Scriptures, but also through other sources of encouragement. He sent His Holy Spirit to speak to us, to guide us, and lead us into all truth.
Jesus modeled this two-way conversation throughout His life. He also embraced a lifestyle of encouragement, changing the atmosphere and lives of people everywhere He went.
This is why I wrote the book, The Gift of Prophetic Encouragement. I don’t know about you, but I want to change the atmosphere and edify the lives of people everywhere I go. Together, we can change our world one encouraging word at a time.
Join me as we journey together in embracing a lifestyle of prophetic encouragement.

It is such a comfort to know that God still speaks to us today. Thank you for such a beautiful reminder, Debbie.
One phrase really popped this morning, Debbie -> “Open your ears”
At least some of the time, when I’m not hearing God’s voice, it’s because I’m not listening.
Hi Debbie! It is so wonderful to hear from God! When He speaks you can’t help but listen and I’m so glad He wants to have a one on one conversation with each of us. Thanks for a reminder of that truth today. Blessings!
Hello Connie! Yes, it is so wonderful to hear from God. You are most welcome for the reminder. Blessing to you as well.
So comforting to know that He always hears us and we can hear Him when we posture ourselves for reception! laurensparks.net
Yes Lauren, it is sooooo comforting to know that He hears me when I pray, but it’s even more comforting to know I can hear Him too. Blessings
I’m so, so grateful for this truth: “He wasn’t distant, but that He wanted to have a personal relationship with me.” Thanks, Debbie! It’s such a miracle that our Creator didn’t just create us and walk away, but longs to continue walking with us.
You are most welcome, Lisa. I agree, it is a miracle that He continues to still want to walk with us even when we aren’t the best at the whole relationship piece ourselves. I am grateful for this truth as well. 🙂
Thank you for hosting this opportunity to bring bloggers together and share their posts. I look forward to your party each week. #OverTheMoon #WWBlogHop #ThursdayFavoriteThings.
you are most welcome Marilyn 🙂
I learned that if I open my ears and that God is listening to me. I just have to make sure that I am always listening.
Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.
That is so good Patrick, and yes, it is so true. God is always speaking we just have to listen. Blessing, to you
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
God’s Word changes lives. And what a great Truth it is that He desires a relationship with us – He is not distant!
YES, Jana I agree! God’s word does indeed change lives! AMEN thanks for being here this week.
Listening is a learned skill! And obeying what I hear is even harder! Thanks, Deb!
Sue, yes, I agree … listening is a learned skill, not just with our relationship with God but with others as well. AND yep obeying is even harder. 🙂
I’m so grateful that God not only speaks, but He also listens to me. Sometimes I think my mourns must wear Him out, but He never tires of listening.
Oh Marva, I know what you mean. I am so very grateful that God never tires of listening to me and my woes. He is so faithful and very gracious to me. Thanks for stopping by today.
One of the things I appreciate most about my husband is that he’s great at talking AND listening. I’ve known a few people who married non-talkers and others who married non-listeners (and even a few who have a spouse who’s lousy at both). Even though some of those marriages didn’t dissolve legally, I wouldn’t call them good marriages. How can we expect to have a good relationship with our Lord if we don’t talk and/or listen to Him? We may not lose our salvation, but we miss out on so much.
Oh Julie, you make such a great point! While we don’t lose our salvation, we do miss out on so much when we don’t have the listening and speaking aspect of relationship with GOd. I like how you compare it to marriage. It’s so true and I am blessed with a husband who listens too 🙂 thanks for sharing your thoughts here on the blog. I hope you will come back and linkup on Thursday’s too
I used to be exactly the same way! And while I did believe that God still spoke today, I had trouble believing that God wanted to speak to me! Your wonderful book changed all of that and I am so thankful for that! 🙂 Thank you!
Thanks for linking up @LiveLifeWell!
Blessings,
Amy
You are most welcome and thank you, Amy! I am so glad my book helped to change that in your life. It is so freeing isn’t it? when we realize God will speak to us personally! I so love to link up with you on Friday’s at #LiveLiveWell Blessings to you as well.
I loved that Verizon commercial. It definitely was memorable. And now we can make God memorable by allowing Him to use us to speak His truth and encouragement to others. Your book shows the reader in a very concrete and real way how God speaks to all of us.
It sure was memorable, wasn’t it! I like what you said – now we can make God memorable! I like that a lot, thanks for taking the time to read and comment each week Mary.
