How to Reprogram Untrue Thoughts

By: Sarah Geringer

When I look in the mirror, I’m mostly pleased with how I look, but my own view doesn’t measure up to what others have said for years.

In college, I worked at Baskin Robbins, the famous ice cream store. Yes, I ate ice cream every single day—only a little bit though, or I would have weighed 300+ pounds for sure. A kid’s scoop of mint chocolate chip or pistachio almond satisfied my craving. And I got it for free! One of my favorite jobs ever.

I worked behind the glass counter, facing the floor-to-ceiling windows that made up the store front. This was unnerving to me as an introvert, who preferred to hide behind a curtain of long curls, which had to be swept up into a ponytail for work. I liked decorating the ice cream cakes, so I could face the wall instead of the people.

Every week we received a new shipment of ice cream from a truck that traveled all over the midwestern United States. The driver’s name was Tom, and he was old enough to be my grandfather. He had deeply lined reddish-brown skin and a raspy voice thanks to decades of smoking cigarettes, and a tough yet friendly demeanor. He always made conversation with me and my boss Nina about what he had seen on the road. I helped load the new ice cream tubs into the walk-in freezer while he and Nina filled out paperwork.

One day Nina told me that Tom was talking about me when I was in the freezer. This surprised me, and I stopped working to listen. She said Tom had shaken his head and said, “That girl has no idea how pretty she is.” I asked Nina what he meant by that, and she said, “He’s telling the truth, and I agree with him.”

Their comments have stayed with me for over 20 years. I could agree with other statements, but not that one. Hardworking. Book smart. Good girl. But pretty?

Pretty was always a sticking point for me. I’m not quite sure why, but I’ve long had a problem with feeling pretty, much less beautiful.

Even in God’s eyes. Maybe especially in God’s eyes.

Perhaps you feel the same.

In our image-obsessed culture, it’s hard for every one of us to believe that we’re beautiful. According to John and Stasi Eldredge in Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul, the basic question we women ask is “Am I lovely?” Our enemy Satan will cause us to question this all our lives, no matter what other people tell us or what God says. We have to fight back by studying the truth in God’s Word and inviting it into our hearts.

This summer, God has led me to meditate on the Song of Songs. He has challenged me to apply it to my relationship with him first, as part of the bride of Christ, which is the Church. If I picture Jesus as the Beloved King and me as the Shulamite, this short, unique book takes on new meaning.

The Beloved praises the Shulamite for her beauty, just as Jesus considers you beautiful. You can find metaphorical examples of this in Song of Songs 1:15, 2:2, 4:1-15, 6:4-9, and 7:1-9.

The verse I’ve used for meditation is Song of Songs 6:3 NIV: “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.” If Jesus calls us beautiful and beloved, who are we to argue? You can meditate on this verse, repeating it again and again, to reprogram your self-image every time you are tempted to doubt.

I’ve been thinking untrue thoughts about my image for many years. I’ve negated, downplayed or brushed away affirmations from God and compliments from others.

If #Jesus calls us beautiful and beloved, who are we to argue? Share on X

But since God programmed me to crave a Yes to the question “Am I lovely?”, I must seek it from him first. I’m learning to speak the truth to myself through Christian meditation, and you can do the same with whatever untruths you are believing about yourself.
