Fear has many faces, and it has been a part of my life since I was young.
As a young adult, fear would appear in my life as people pleasing. I was fearful of what you might think or say about me. I was afraid you wouldn’t like me, or that I say the wrong thing.
Everything I did, said, or thought always had some element of the voice of fear speaking behind it…. “You can’t say that, what if your wrong? What if they disagree?” What if… what if.. what if !!! Ugh, trust me that is no way to live.
Romans 8:14-16
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
When the Song No Longer Slaves by Jonathon David and Melissa Helser was released, I had it on repeat for days. I wrote a blog post about it here: No Longer Slaves … Which lead into a 2 part Series on Becoming Sons & Daughters. (Click on the Pictures Below to visit those posts).
I felt led to again talk about “Fear” and decided it’s time we kick it to the curb. It seems everywhere I turn these days, everyone is using the word, or words that are associated with fear. Just fill in the blanks to these sentences:
- I am fearful of what will happen if _________ becomes president.
- I am anxious about ________.
- I am worried about _________.
- I am fearful for our country.
- I am fearful of _________.
Here’s the thing, the enemy deals in fear. He wants us to have fearful, worried, or anxious thoughts, because when we do, then we aren’t exercising our faith, trusting God, or having His peace evident in our life. When we allow fear to creep into our thoughts, our vocabulary, our daily life, then the enemy has an access point where he can torment and distract us from walking in our destiny as God’s children.
Fear is from the enemy, it’s his currency. Faith is from God. Faith is the currency of Heaven.
Which do you want to be operating in?
Please check out the previous posts I have written on this topic and let me know your thoughts.
“No Longer Slaves”
You surround me with a song
Of deliverance from my enemies
‘Til all my fears are gone[2x]
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of GodFrom my mother’s womb
You have chosen me
Love has called my name
I’ve been born again
Into your family
Your blood flows through my veins[4x]
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God
I am surrounded
By the arms of the father
I am surrounded
By songs of deliverance
We’ve been liberated
From our bondage
We’re the sons and the daughters
Let us sing our freedom
You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
My fears were drowned in perfect love
You rescued me
And I could stand and sing
I am a child of God…
You split the sea
So I could walk right through it
You drowned my fears in perfect love
You rescued me
And I will stand and sing
I am a child of God
Yes, I am
I am a child of God
I am a child of God
Yes, I am
I am a child of God
Full of faith
Yes, I am a child of God
I am a child of God
[3x]
I’m no longer a slave to fear
I am a child of God

I so appreciate your message on fear. It is so needed these days. I appreciate 2 Timothy 1:7 …”For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Trusting God is what the Christian life is all about…not fear. Thank you Debbie!
Kathleen – thank you, I am so glad that you appreciated the message. Yes, I love the 2 Timothy Scripture too. Yep, completely agree – trust not fear.
I too have been a hostage to fear for many years. Thankful for your words today. Visiting from Coffee For Your Heart.
Deanna – I am so glad my words were helpful to you and I am believing both of our days being hostages to fear are long gone! Blessings and thank you for visiting
Amen! I love this song too, Debbie. The first time (and every time after) I heard it, I would blast it and bellow out, twirling and worshiping. I was able to sing it at church too which was exciting and brought a new dynamic to the atmosphere as the bridge where it repeats and breaks causes one to have “pondering” time in between during the instrumental part. Our church is more traditional and has slowly gravitated towards “singing a new song of praise!” This is exciting to see people I grew up with start to get on fire. There is something about music isn’t there? I guess as we sing it passionately we are hearing it, and so as we hear it we start to believe it and become a little bit more bold than before! Love this message today!
Oh man – the bridge is one of my favorite parts – I mean I LOVE the whole song, but yes, the bridge gives you that ‘a-ha’ Hey He does split the sea wide open and moves everything out of the way so I can walk on through…. so good. WE too sing it at church, it always has a powerful effect on the congregation too. There is most definitely something about music – I believe it penetrates through walls and barriers that we don’t even know exist. It is so exciting to hear people are catching fire – Go God! Thanks for sharing with me how this song has impacted not just your life, but those in your church as well. I love it!
The message of “no longer slaves” AND the song have been speaking to me for the past year. When we sing the song at church, I bawl! I don’t mean shed a tear or cry a bit…I bawl like a baby. Not sure what the people who sit near me are thinking, as I continue to do this every time! 🙂 But the message and spirit of the song ruins me. Thanks for this post. (Visiting from #FaithFilledFriday)
Karlene – Thanks for sharing the powerful impact that this song has on you as well. God is definitely up to something with us (His people) and getting rid of those things that hold us back isn’t He? I am so glad you stopped by today.
I listened to that Bethel song on repeat for one solid week. LOVE IT. I’m with you on kicking that demon fear off the road but do me a fave, use your “good” foot. Love you. xo
Hahaha – Susan – that is a great idea – I will most definitely use the good foot! LOL but so glad I am not alone in kicking nasty fear to the curb by myself. I always enjoy when you stop by 🙂
As someone who has battled anxiety and fear her whole life, I think this is a great post! It’s always helpful to be reminded that God is in control! Thanks for joining us at #FridayFrivolity!
Thanks Lisa, I am so glad that you enjoyed this post and I am glad that it was helpful in reminding you and me too that God is in control. Thanks for stopping by today.
I love this song! I’m fearful of the unknown, it doesn’t press on me like it used to, I’m getting better at trusting the path God has for us. But I have more work to do.
I think we will always have more work to do, but I say any progress is some progress so that is worth celebrating for certain! thanks for stepping
Debbie, this is so spot on! It seems many of us are talking about fear and maybe this is a great way for us to encourage and support each other through the challenge. Just love your Vlogs and enjoy looking forward to them on Fresh Market Friday! No longer a slave to fear…YES!
Thank you Crystal! I am so glad you are enjoying the Vlogs- I missed linking up this past Friday due to travel – but will return next week 🙂 Yes, I agree, this is a great way to encourage and support one another through the challenges we face everyday – thanks for stopping by!
thank you for sharing your thoughts and encouragement at #Fridayfrivolity!
