First let me apologize for no link up last week. In our crazy hectic schedule of late, I thought I had pre-scheduled the post to go live. However, I only had it saved as a draft to go live. UGH – epic fail, but not to worry, I am back with our final installment of the Psalm 23 Series.
Welcome!
Can you believe this is our final post in the Psalm 23 Series? WOW, I have been blessed by digging into these verses and I hope you have too.
Thank you for joining me each week as we continue our journey through Psalms 23. It is one of the most well-known Scriptures. Many quote it or recite it by wrote, but have we taken the time to dive into the depth and richness found in these six short verses? Do we know what it means to live and be a Psalm 23 people?
If you have missed previous posts on Psalm 23, you can find them here:
Living As A Psalm 23 Person
For the last 8-weeks we have broken down the six verses of Psalms 23 to look in depth on what it means to be a Psalm 23 person. But now we need to move it from our research and knowledge to living it out. You may recall that when I released my prophetic encouragement word for 2021 in it, the Lord said He was going to teach us, His Church, to live and be Psalm 23 people. If you missed that post, you read it in its entirety here:
“…The Lord then showed me a beautiful picture of rich, lush green rolling hills with a stream flowing gently down. “Lord, what is this? Why are you showing me this?” I asked.
I had an overwhelming sense of rest and peace. Then I heard the Lord say, “Psalm 23”
“Yes, Lord, but what specifically about Psalm 23?”
This was His reply:
For in this season of 2021, I will teach My church what it really means to be and live as a Psalm 23 people. Not just one verse or a part of, but the entire portion of Scripture.
For I the Lord Am the Good Shepherd (Jn 10:11). I Am the Lion of Judah (rev 5:5). I AM the Lamb who was slain for you (Jn 1:29), and I AM the Resurrected King (Jn 11:25) who will return for you! …”
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever. (NIV)
The Lord challenged me a few years ago to change the version of the Bible I was reading when I was doing my devotions. I have always been a NIV girl all the way. My husband prefers the ESV. But I took the Lord’s challenge to heart and researched different versions of the Bible. I settled on The Voice Translation at the time. I liked how it was a play/dialogue narrative of scripture. I noticed that as I sat down to read familiar verses in The Voice translation different pieces of wording stood out to me. This led to newfound revelation in verses I would or could easily gloss over because I already “knew” them. Since that time, I have found one of the ways to see a verse in a new light and see things I might not otherwise see is to look at the same verse in a variety of translations. Not only is it enlightening, it is very helpful in going deeper. I pray that you have enjoyed this aspect of my Psalms 23 series. And it is something I pray you will try it for yourself in the future.
Which version of the Bible is your go-to version?
If you were to read a different version than your go-to” which on would you choose and why?
God is not just calling us to Be a Psalm 23 person, in this season, He is calling us to live and walk out every part of what it means to be a Psalm 23 person.
To live as a Psalm 23 person, we need to understand that God is not just A Good Shepherd, He is OUR good Shepherd. He is our best friend, and as a friend and a shepherd He provides and cares for us, ALWAYS.
Yahweh is my best friend and my shepherd.
I always have more than enough. (Psalm 23:1 TPT)
Not only does God always watch out and care for us, He takes extra special care to ensure that we can be free from fear and thrive in an environment of peace, refreshing and rest. We can be fearless with God!
The Eternal is my shepherd, He cares for me always.
2 He provides me rest in rich, green fields
beside streams of refreshing water.
He soothes my fears; (Psalm 23:1-2 The Voice).
It doesn’t mean that we will always “feel” refreshed, but the truth is, it comes down to letting go of our fears and anxiety and TRUST-ing God. It doesn’t mean we won’t feel or experience fear, but it does mean we need to trust Him to be there and know that He will soothe our fears. We won’t be overcome by fear, rather we will be able to rest assured that He is leading, guiding, protecting and providing for us. But that’s not all, nope that’s only the first 4 power-packed verses.
The Eternal is my shepherd, He cares for me always.
2 He provides me rest in rich, green fields
beside streams of refreshing water.
He soothes my fears;
3 He makes me whole again,
steering me off worn, hard paths
to roads where truth and righteousness echo His name.4 Even in the unending shadows of death’s darkness,
I am not overcome by fear.
Because You are with me in those dark moments,
near with Your protection and guidance,
I am comforted.5 You spread out a table before me,
provisions in the midst of attack from my enemies;
You care for all my needs, anointing my head with soothing, fragrant oil,
filling my cup again and again with Your grace.
6 Certainly Your faithful protection and loving provision will pursue me
where I go, always, everywhere.
I will always be with the Eternal,
in Your house forever. (Psalm 23 The Voice)
This is a “but wait, there’s more” moment! As if the first four verses were not powerful enough to make us feel well taken care of, David goes on to share just how much God exceeds in His love and care for us.
David has lived out what it means to be a Psalm 23 person and we can too. David isn’t just making poetic accolades toward God. The things David wrote about in the 23rd Psalm are heartfelt experiences. Yes, David experienced having a table set before him in the presence of his enemies. BUT God was faithful. He provided. He watched out for and guided David along the way. He honored David as His anointed King and as an individual. But most importantly, David came to understand that even his great sin and fears were no match for the love of God. God would always be there for him, and David had an open invitation to live and be and dwell in the house of the Lord forever. That same invitation is there for us today.
What one thing can you and will you do today to begin living as a Psalm 23 person?

Psalm 23 as an invitation! I want to spend some time meditating on this reality.
I flip flop between NIV and NASB but do look at scriptures in other translations. Especially now that I am doing some verse mapping.
That’s awesome Lauren. I’ve heard about verse mapping but never done it before. It sounds intriguing to me.
Psalm 23 is a great one. I love it also,. Thanks for sharing this.
You are welcome 🙂
