More of God, less of me …
This is the cry of my heart today more than ever. It seems when there is more of me and less oh Him, I get into trouble. You know the kind of trouble I’m taking about, right? …The ‘open mouth insert foot’ kind of trouble. Or spontaneously responding before thinking and then just as quickly have to apologize for the very words that came spilling out of your mouth?
As I shared on Tuesday on the video blog, I have had a particular song running through my mind and thoughts for the last several days. It’s as if it’s on repeat on the tape that is playing in my mind. It’s a great Holy Spirit driven song, so it’s no wonder why it’s been a song my spirit longs for, and my soul desperately needs.
The song is called, “Set a Fire.” It is a simple Verse and a Chorus, but there is so much power in the words, few as there may be.
At the most random moments throughout the week, I have found myself singing the words… I want more of you God. Then of course I begin sing the remainder of the song, but always coming back to, I want more of you God.
My heart is breaking over the things I see on the news and social media. I see people attacking people because of their political stances, their beliefs, or who they voted for. It seems like fear is setting the tone and the mood for the country. Please know, that I am preaching, as much to myself as I am to anyone. I am and have been guilty of thinking or doing some of these very things I am about to say.
I say, we need less of social media, less of the news, less of pointing fingers, and placing blame. We need to not be moved by fear, but rather stand in faith.
Maybe instead of pointing fingers and shouting accusations, we need to pray.
Maybe instead of screaming at one another, we need to love each other.
Maybe instead of looking at things in the natural, we ask God what He is up to and what He has to say.
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. (Romans 13:1-2)
Maybe instead of fearing what may happen, we trust God has a plan and He is big enough to handle whatever may come.
Maybe instead of our wants and desires, we need more of His.
After all His ways are not or ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).
Maybe instead of drawing lines in the sand, we need to come together in unity.
Maybe we need Him to set a fire within all of us, to burn away the gunk and purify our hearts.
Maybe instead of more news, more social media, more, more, more of anything, we just need More of God.
It’s in His presence that we experience peace amidst the storms and chaos swirling around us.
It’s in His presence that fear flees and faith rises up.
It’s in His presence that He speaks.
What this world needs is less of us and more of Him!
Lord, make Psalm 23 my prayer today and everyday.
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

Hi, Debbie! I saw your name on a comment on Meg’s site, and remembered I’d met you at She Speaks. 🙂 — Yes to all of that. More of Him, SO much less of me. The prayer of my heart as well. Thank you for sharing. 🙂 Will you be attending SS again this year?
Hello Brenda! Nice to have you pop by today. I am unsure if I will be able to attend this year. I absolutely enjoyed my time last year and thought SS was the best conference I have attended like it so far. However, I have a few scheduling details to work through first. How about you?
Hi, debbie! You have such exciting news and good for you! Bless you as you move forward in peace and boldness. I’m glad we’ve connected from SS (and no, I’m not returning this year) I’m sad for our country but not despondent because all along, God is in charge – and the craziness makes me pray more which is no small thing!
love, sue
ps I was just asked to do the retreat at Warm Beach Conf center May 5 weekend, so God worked all that out – two exact weekends in a row in Seattle area – I don’t know why I get so surprised as God’s leading.. .
hey Sue! So very happy for you to have gotten 2 speaking gigs up here. I did pass your name and info on to my friends up North of Seattle, so who knows, you may get more….. I am not going to SS this year either, too many others things around that time of year, plus I have to be over in SC area the end of May/June time and can’t afford 2 flights and 2 trips that close together this year….. Yes, praying is about all we can do – pray and read the word, and get in His presence. that’s the most important tings during this season, I believe. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.
Yes, I definitely need more of Christ and less of me. Perfect words for my word this year – die.
Oh wow, your word is die? I am going to need to head over to your site and read about your word and how it came about. Such a great, intriguing word… dying to self comes to mind. hmm you have definitely piqued my interest. thank you for talking the time to stop by and share a comment
P.S. thanks for linking up at Literacy Musing Mondays.
and you are most welcome – thank you for stopping by and reading my post.
YES, amen!!! Great message, Debbie. The more I get filled with Him, my mind and conscious become clear and I able to love people better I have found. Love without guilt, free, etc…
Thanks for linking up!
Thanks Meg! I want more and more and more of Him in every part of my life too. I am so very happy to link up thanks for stopping by 🙂
Debbie, I wholeheartedly agree with this post. I have been shutting down and passing by posts with a negative connotation. Not that I am unfriending or unfollowing people but I can not allow the negativity into my life. As far as I’m concerned, God knew the winner of this election way before it happened. He does have mysterious ways and I have no idea what they are, but I do need to continue in Christian ways. God uses the willing and he qualifies them. I am hoping to see Unity, and praying for it everyday.
Oh thank you so much Nikki – the night I wrote this post, I wasn’t even sure what to write and I was conflicted in my heart by all the negative things going on. I wanted to address them, but yet at a loss of words to do so… then all of the sudden, this phrase More of God .. less of me just kept resounding through my head and heart. I agree with you – God knew He knows it all, and He just asks us to trust Him and believe… plus, I agree with you, we need more unity! Blessings
Debbie,
I always need more of God and less of me. What a great post to remind me. Now, I have that song in my head- love it.
Blessings,
Maree
Maree, I am glad you enjoyed my post, and hahaha – yes, that song gets stuck in my head when I listen to it too. Blessings to you as well.
