As I scrolled through the emails my heart skipped a beat. “Oh no,” I thought to myself, “It’s the dreaded MailChimp stats email” …. I hesitated for a minute wondering if I should even dare open it up and look, or if I should just let it pass me by. All the while I had a twinge of pain in my stomach, yet I was just too curious and wondered who unsubscribed this time?
Never in a million years was I prepared for the email and name that was associated with it to be on my unsubscribe list. I stared blankly at my phone and felt as if I had just been punched in the gut!
Wowza, what in the world had happened? How did this come to be? I thought they were my friend. I guess now I know why I haven’t heard anything from them in a long while. Now it makes more sense when I did reach out there was always a reason for postponement or cancellation, but never in a million years would I have expected this.
Has this scenario ever happened to you? Maybe not an unsubscribe from an email list, but maybe instead an unfriend or unfollow from someone on social media who you thought was your friend?
Oh how I wish I didn’t know what this scenario was all about, however, truthfully it happened less than a month ago. I was shocked and at a loss for words and had no idea how to respond, I just reacted feeling hurt, rejected, betrayed… about the same time I got unsubscribed to by a friend, another friend was telling me that she had just read a few sample chapters from a new book about to be released and that we should read it together. She mentioned the title Never Unfriended and I thought, huh, funny title but so appropriate considering what had just happened to me.
Shortly after that conversation and terrible ‘unsubscribing’ incident where I was left feeling betrayed, I was contacted by Icon Media about reviewing a book called Never Unfriended!
Coincident? I think not…. God was totally working behind the scenes to orchestrate circumstances so I could get my hands-on Lisa-Jo Bakers book Never Unfriended. I immediately shot off an email saying – send me the book, YES I will write a review and then it didn’t come for over a month. But I will say, it was worth the wait.
Lisa-Jo has a ‘down to earth’ friend next door writing style and it came through on every page. I have to say, she was not what I would expect. I mean, what author tells you to start anywhere in the book you want? Most authors want you to read it cover to cover, but not Lisa-Jo. In the introduction she lays it all on the line, telling the reader what to expect and where to start depending on what you need in that moment. Right away I found that she drew me in with this statement:
“Friendship is not for the faint of heart”…. (page 1 Never Unfriended)
I wanted to shout a hearty Amen but knew the people around me on the airplane would wonder what was wrong with me.
Whether you have recently felt the pain of a friendship ended, have ever struggled with friendships, or just want to know how to be a better friend, this book is for you.
Lisa-Jo clearly writes from her experiences and isn’t that what you want? Someone who is an expert because they have lived and experienced it not someone who has just studied it and understands the theory behind it.
Here is what Icon Media how to say about Lisa-Jo Baker’s Never Unfriended:
Never Unfriended: The Secret to Finding & Keeping Lasting Friendships
As the community manager at the website incourage.me since 2010, Lisa-Jo Baker has had the chance to engage hundreds of conversations with women about friendship. Starting with that guarantee from the most faithful friend who ever lived—Jesus—this book is a step-by-step guide to friendships you can trust. It answers the questions that lurk under the surface of every friendship—What are we afraid of? What can’t we change? What can we change? And where do we start? —with personal stories and practical tips to help you make the friends, and be the friend, that lasts.
Never Unfriended: –back cover has this to say:
In a world where women can unfriend each other with the swipe of a finger, how do we find friendships that we can trust to last? Maybe by first becoming those kinds of lasting friends ourselves.
As the community manager at the website incourage.me since 2010, Lisa-Jo Baker has had the chance to engage hundreds of conversations with women about friendship. She’s learned that no one can make us quite as unsure about ourselves as another woman. And nothing can wound as deeply as unkind words from a friend. While we are all hungry for friendship, it’s the fear of feeling awkward and being rejected, left out, or hurt (again) that often keep us from connecting.
But what if we knew we could never be unfriended? Would we risk friendship then?
Starting with that guarantee from the most faithful friend who ever lived—Jesus—this book is a step-by-step guide to friendships you can trust. It answers the questions that lurk under the surface of every friendship—What are we afraid of? What can’t we change? What can we change? And where do we start?—with personal stories and practical tips to help you make the friends, and be the friend, that lasts.
Be blessed and I encourage you to give this book a chance. Enjoy reading
