Do you choose #OneWord to help you guide your year?

Or maybe you choose a Scripture?

Or maybe you choose a phrase, or nothing at all?

I would love for you to share with me in the comments what you do and what God has been speaking to you regarding this coming year.

This will be my sixth year participating in the #OneWord movement. I have participated in choosing one, single solitary word to guide my year.  Not a word of my choosing, but God’s.

My past words have been:

  • 2020 – Dream
  • 2019 – Miracle
  • 2018 – Vision
  • 2017 – Dwell
  • 2016 – Advance

My #OneWord for 2021 is … Prosper!

Yes, I know it’s March already, and most people have already shared about their #Oneword for the year, however, there were two things that prohibited me from sharing sooner. First, I wanted to finish the Series on Spiritual Warfare. YAY! And second, I have been in a wrestling match with God about this particular word. I didn’t want “prosper” to be my one word.  You may be wondering why?

When I heard the word prosper, my mind went directly to financial, and I was worried what other people might think of me when they heard this word prosper. I know, I know – not a smart move on my part. But, no matter how many times I kept asking and hoping for a different answer, the response was always, “Prosper.” Finally, I relented and when I asked God for a Scripture to go with my word, I heard: “… may you prosper as your soul prospers.”

Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers (3 John 1:2).NKJV

Websters Dictionary defines prosper as:

pros·per | \ ˈprä-spər  \

prosperedprospering\ ˈprä-sp(ə-)riŋ  \

Definition of prosper

intransitive verb

1: to succeed in an enterprise or activity especially: to achieve economic success

2: to become strong and flourishing

transitive verb

to cause to succeed or thrive

Prosperity isn’t just about financial blessing or gain. It is about succeeding in every area of our lives.  After finally relenting when God would not give me a different word, I began praying and searching Scripture for more places where God talks about prospering. There are a more than I thought, but these two were the ones that resonated with me the most.

Let the words from the book of the law be always on your lips. Meditate on them day and night so that you may be careful to live by all that is written in it. If you do, as you make your way through this world, you will prosper and always find success. (Joshua 1:8 The Voice)

Joshua tells us, if we keep God’s word as our focus we will prosper.  If we will meditate on it and live by God’s Word we will be successful and thrive in our daily lives.

Beloved friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and that you continually enjoy good health, just as your soul is prospering (3 John 1:2) The Passion Translation.

This particular passage out of 3 John specifically talks about our soul prospering. But what exactly is our soul?

The soul is sometimes confused with the spirit, but Scripture makes a clear distinction when it tells us we must present our whole body, soul, and spirit.62

Greek word for “soul”:

Psuche: the seat of the feelings, desires, affections, aversions

Hebrew word for “soul”:

Nephesh: soul, self, life, appetite, mind, desire, emotion, passion

The soul is the site of our personality. It is comprised of our will, intellect (our mind), and emotions.

Watchman Nee explains the soul like this: “The soul comprises the intellect, which aids us in the present state of existence, and the emotions, which proceed from the senses. Since the soul belongs to man’s own self and reveals his personality, it is termed the part of self-consciousness. The spirit is that part by which we commune with God and by which alone we are able to apprehend and worship Him. Because it tells us of our relationship with God, the spirit is called the element of God-consciousness. God dwells in the spirit and self-dwells in the soul, while senses dwell in the body.”

I often tell people that it’s our soul: our mind, will, and emotions that get us into trouble.

I am still digging into all that God has for me or wants me to understand about this word “prosper.”  I know it’s about being prosperous in my soul and all other areas of my life. I know that this year will involve some more heart and emotional healing, rest, and refreshing.

If you have other thoughts on this word: “Prosper” I would love to hear it.

Also, don’t forget to share your #OneWord for 2021 with me in the comments below.

Blessings,

Debbie
