“When do you obey?” I said rather sternly as I picked up my daughter and sat her on the kitchen counter.
Big crocodile tears began up in her eyes, she replied, “The first time momma.”
She then proceeded to burst into tears. As a mom, I was both frustrated, upset, and panicked. I was in the kitchen preparing dinner and I had turned away from the cutting board to check a pot on the stove when I turned around and saw her little hands reaching up towards the knife I had sat on the counter. I panicked and yelled for her to stop. She didn’t, and the knife came crashing to the floor. Thank you Jesus it didn’t harm her or cut her, but it did scare her.
I think sometimes God wants to sit me on the counter, look me in the eye and ask, “Debbie, when do we obey?”
Of course the answer is the first time! However, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes, I drag my feet, or argue. I do this mostly because I am afraid or uncomfortable.
I have learned that delayed obedience is still disobedience.

For the longest time, I never understood the book of Leviticus. I have been known to skip over it in my reading plan until I absolutely have to read it, or I can work up the gumption to read it straight through. That is until I realized the importance of the book of Leviticus. God loved His people so much, that He wanted to keep them safe, so there were certain instructions and rules they needed to follow. They might not have made sense to them, but they needed to obey. It was for their safety. God wanted them around for a long time and not taken out by mold or trichinosis.
However, God wants us to not only obey, but He wants us to be radical in our obedience. Noah was radical in his obedience. Abram was radical in his, and Jesus … He too was radical in his obedience – radical unto death. He knew the Father’s heart and He trusted Him. it was out of this relationship with the Father, that Jesus radically obeyed everything the Father told Him to speak and He did everything the Father showed Him to do. We need to do the same. Even when we don’t understand, or we want to ask “why?” we need to be radical in our obedience and trust that God loves us.

The Word of God teaches us that we are to obey God and His commandments. But it is so much more than that. True obedience comes from relationship. When we are in relationship with someone and are asked or told to do something there is an ease in which we respond or want to obey. When we trust the person, and know their heart, we don’t feel the need to question or argue… well, most of the time. For me, I never understood all God’s rules and regulations in the book of Leviticus. That is until I realized, God was giving them instruction for their safety. Why? Because He loved them and wanted relationship with them.
When God speaks to His people, it isn’t just to tell us what He is doing, it is also to move us towards obedience. However, He wants our hearts to go beyond just obeying to immediate, radical obedience.

Such a great life lesson that I have to relearn over and over again.
