For the next several weeks, I am going to break down portions of the Prophetic Word for 2020 I released at the end of December at our church and which I posted here on the blog on January 2, 2020.
If you haven’t had the opportunity to read it, you can find it by clicking here. Or on the image below.
Run with the Horses
After the service ended a young woman approached me and asked in earnest. “Pastor Debbie, why in the world would I want to run with the horses?”
I looked at her and knew she was simply asking an innocent enough question. She wasn’t mocking me or rejecting the word I had shared. She truly didn’t comprehend why she or anyone for that matter needed to run with the horses.
Jeremiah 12:5 says:
If you have raced with men on foot
and they have worn you out,
how can you compete with horses?
If you stumble in safe country,
how will you manage in the thickets by the Jordan?
Jeremiah was going through a tough time. He was calling out to God for relief and a reprieve. However, God’s response was not what Jeremiah expected, nor is it what we might expect or want if we find ourselves in the same position.
Jeremiah was an obedient servant and prophet for the Lord. He loved God and was really struggling. Jeremiah cries out to God in the first four verses of chapter 12. God’s response: “If you think this is bad, then how do you expect to handle things when it gets really tough?”
I know shocker, right? C’mon God! Jeremiah is a faithful servant and he needs some encouragement and positive reinforcement. But NO. Instead God gives him some straight talk. Not exactly the pep talk and relief Jeremiah was hoping for, but sometimes God’s response to our prayers are not always easy to handle, but they are always truthful and for our good.
As I was meditating on this particular verse, it struck me that God isn’t just telling Jeremiah to knock it off and to stop complaining. God is actually getting Jeremiah to switch his focus and He (God) is preparing him for the tougher road ahead and what’s to come.
God is telling Jeremiah, “I know you want it easy, and you want immediately relief but I am building strength and stamina in you so you can not just run the race in front of you with endurance, but so that you can far exceed what you think is humanly impossible.”
Modern day lingo might be something like this: “Stop having a pity party and asking for life to be easy. Pull yourself up by the bootstraps, trust Me (God), move forward and keep your eyes focused on Me (God). Things in the days and years ahead are going to be a lot tougher than this and I (God) need you to pull yourself together because I have big plans for you. (Jer. 29:11) Plans where you will compete and run with strength and endurance (Hebrews 12:1-3) that far exceed the plans or things that are right in front of you now. C’mon. Get up, get going, and trust Me (God).
How does this relate to us right now?
How does this relate to 2020 and the decade to come?
A Portion of the word I released for 2020 says this:
Healing & Endurance
This is a year for us, the church, to run with the horses. (Jer. 12:5) It’s a season of healing and endurance a season of preparation and expansion. Don’t go around the mountain any longer, it’s time to go North. (Duet 2:3) No more excuses, delays or holding onto the hurts of the past. No more complaining, deflecting or hiding. It’s a season of acceptance, forgiveness and moving forward. God is calling us, the church, to run the race before us with power, endurance and expansion in our lives. It’s time to let go and release the wounds of the past and walk in the fullness of ALL God has for us.
Right now, amidst the current climate and situations around the world, we are calling out to God for relief. I do believe He is answering us, and we are coming out the other side. However, this is just a preparation season for us. A season for us to hit the divine reset button, to get our priorities right, and our focus off the worldly things and back onto God and His Kingdom priorities. As the time of our Saviors return gets closer and closer, things in the world will get harder and harder. Scripture tells us that we won’t know the time and season of His return, but we can sure know the signs of the times. He said we will have wars and rumors of wars. (Matthew 24)
We need to take this time when we and the rest of the world are not living life as usual to seek God and receive the healing that is needed. This is a time to go deep! We need to dig deep and prepare to run the race of endurance God has set out for each one of us. However, we have to prepare ourselves to do so.
Running with the horses will look different for each one of us. For me, it’s starting a new project with a friend, starting to write another book, and preparing for times of speaking and ministry that I know are ahead.
What does “Running with the Horses” look like for you?

Maybe, as we stop, pray, and hear what God would have us do, we will be able to intentionally spread the Love of Jesus in practical simple ways. Then maybe, just maybe, we will encourage and build others up.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

God is calling us to be agents of encouragement and to be the gift the worlds needs today.
We live in a time, where those around us are in desperate need of a real encounter with Jesus and in need of encouragement. We are called to encourage one another daily (Hebrews 3:13), and to build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11). My book will teach you how to step out and do just that.

Eugene Peterson pulled that same phrase from Jeremiah for his wonderful book on that prophet. I spent nearly a year in it, and have never looked at it the same since.
Oh, I really appreciate Eugene Peterson’s writing and the way he breaks things down. I didn’t know he had a book on Jeremiah – I will have to look for it. Thanks for sharing about it. Blessings
“Get up, get going, and trust Me (God).” That is definitely a challenging and exciting word for 2020. Who could have imagined these circumstances for it? God! 🙂
Lisa, I so agree! Definitely challenging words and yet exciting ones too as we watch God do something with as we continue on into 2020.
Hey Deb, I so agree with your word today. Preparation is the word Holy Spirit gave me in March. I gave up on #missionpossible…it became too tedious for me. I know, I know. Love you Debbie!
Thanks Susan! I appreciate you. I am sorry mission possible became tedious – it’s not supposed to be, just a positive fun way we can encourage others. I do know you love me and I am so honored to have you in my life. Love and blessings. XOXO
I agree … I do believe this is a time of preparation. I love that term you used earlier – divine reset.
I’m praying I don’t waste it but do what He wants me to do during this time.
Thank you, Jerralea! That is my prayer as well. I don’t want to waste this time or miss what He has for me in this season. <3 Blessing
This is a good word for me today.
Lauren, I am so glad today’s word blessed you. 🙂
As I’ve struggled with some of the current situations due to the coronavirus shutdown I felt like the Lord spoke the same verse about running with the horses into my heart. This is confirmation to me.
Elizabeth – that is so awesome! I just love how God confirms His messages to us so we know we are on the right path and the same page as other believers. Thank you so much for sharing this with me, it blessed me greatly to hear.
So very nice. Thanks for sharing. Hope you and your family are safe and healthy.
thank you Patrick! Yes, we are doing well up here in WA state
