Sow Deep – Abundantly Reap

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. (Galatians 6:7-10)

I know the above Scripture is often used in reference to finances, but it is so much bigger than that.  The principle of reaping and sowing covers all areas of our life.

I liken fasting to gardening or planting a field.  When I fast, I know I am preparing my life for the things God wants to do in and through me.  Not just for right now, but for days, weeks, months, and years to come.  Fasting is a spiritual discipline, which is not always enjoyable to my flesh, but nonetheless necessary to spiritual advancement and growth.

I am not a gardener and I did not inherited my grandmother’s green-thumb for plants, but I sure do love to have all sorts of flowers in pots and hanging baskets around my home.  I often start out really good caring for them, watering them, and tending them.  They begin to bloom, blossom, and grow.  Then, it seems, over time, I water them less, or don’t tend them as much as they need.  The effect is they become dry, parched, stop growing or even die.

Sometimes, during a fast, I will reap immediate benefits and answers to my requests.  However, other times, I must wait, and wait, and wait some more.

Just like in a garden, or a field there are many stages to preparing the field before it is ready for harvest.  First you must prepare and till the soil.  Then, you must remove any obstacles, big or small like rocks or brush, that were exposed during the tilling process.  Then you sow seed, water, and wait.  Then you water some more, and wait.  Some things begin to sprout, but so do the weeds, and so you weed, water and wait some more.  Until one day what you sowed begins to produce.  We don’t stop caring for the field, we continue to harvest, water, weed in hopes that more will be burst forth.  So that our harvest will be continually bountiful.

When the crop you plant yields it first harvest, don’t you want more?

Remember this, whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

Honestly, I have rarely seen immediate results for the things I was fasting about. Sometimes yes, but other times no, it often came about in a later season.

In God’s time table, not mine.

Bob Sorge in his Book the Secrets of the Secret Place says, “when you sow to the Spirit by giving dedicated time to the secret place, you will eventually reap life in the Spirit.”

He later goes on to say, “when we arise from sowing into the secret place, we will not usually be able to point to immediate results or benefits.  What we sow today will require an entire season of growth before the results are manifested.”

Now re-read the above quotes and replace the word “fast” where it says “sow”.

I don’t know if you fast as a spiritual discipline or if you gave up something this lent season as a kind of “fast” but no matter what you are doing,  don’t get discouraged.

Keep moving and pressing forward, Keep your eyes focused on Jesus.
