Standing in Victory
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people…(Ephesians 6:10-18)
“You want me to do what?”
Stand!
“Uhmmm… But I am dressed and ready to go. I am ready for battle!”
That’s good, but I just need you to Stand right there.
I know this conversation may sound humorous, and trust me, it was when I was having it with the third-grade boy in Sunday School class that had just put on his spiritual armor. But truth be told, it is also a conversation I, myself, have had with the Lord on numerous occasions.
Just like the young boy in Sunday School, I wondered why in the world God would give me armor, ask me to dress in it and be prepared for the battle at hand if all I was going to do was stand?
Why are we told to “stand” not once, but four times in three verses?
When God says something once, we need to pay attention and heed it. However, when He repeats Himself, it is of the utmost importance that we understand the fulness of what He is saying so we don’t miss it. So, what exactly does “stand” mean?
Stand – Stete, stenai – to endure
- Stand against the devil’s schemes
- when you have done everything (accomplished), to stand.
- Stand firm
Endure means to suffer (something painful or difficult) patiently. To remain in existence; last. To hold out against.
Stand – to oppose, to set against, to resist
- Stand your ground
Resist means to withstand the action or effect of. Succeed in ignoring the attraction of (something wrong or unwise).
- Temptation – resist the devil and he will flee
- What happens if you don’t take that thought captive and make it obedient to Christ?
- The opposite of resisting is embracing
Once we have put the armor on, and we are dressed for battle, we have been given a charge by Paul to stand. He is telling us to stand firm, to endure, and to resist. If we are told to endure in our standing, that means we it won’t always be a quick work, but we must remain and hold out against the enemy and resist.
How do we resist? We take every thought captive and submit to the obedience of Christ. We have to make sure we are dressed in the entire armor of God. So we can resist the enemy’s schemes. Sometimes we need to have our minds and thoughts reshaped and reformed to be obedient to God’s ways and not our own ways.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5)
I don’t know about you, but I am a DO-er! I am not very good about being a BE-er. I am a fighter, a go getter, and someone who makes things happen. “Standing” requires us to not be a “do-er” but rather a “be-er.”
Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10).
While doing research about the context in which Paul might have been telling us to stand, I came across a Roman battle formation called the “phalanx.” The phalanx is about community. A community of soldiers (people) standing firm together. A community of people that comes together. It is important when we are in community. It’s especially important during times of warfare or battle to be in community with one another.
Soldiers in a phalanx formation would stand eight-men deep, shoulder to shoulder. When they would stand firm and didn’t break rank, they were invincible and struck fear into the hearts of the enemy.
So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter (2 Thessalonians 2:15).
We stand firm, wearing our armor, and hold our ground together in community, it is for protecting and strengthen one another. When one is weak the whole line is weakened. but when we stand in community, there is strength and support for the one who is weak in the moment.
We are told to put on the full armor so we can stand. I believe it is so we can be Reminded. When we feel the weight and protection of the armor, we can know that God is all around us. We are also reminded that when we stand it is in a position as a child of God. The enemy will come, but when he does, we hold our ground and remember that God is on our side. Not only is He on our side, God is always Victorious.
Remember, we don’t fight for victory, we fight from Victory!
Jesus Christ is Risen from the grave and He has already won the battle on our behalf. When must endure the moments and the battles in the now, that come our way. BUT the way we endure is to continue to be filled with Hope.
Who do we stand for? We are called to:
- Stand for our family
- Stand for the salvation of others
- Stand for our neighbors
- Stand in the counsel of the Lord
- Stand for truth
- Stand for Righteousness
- Stand for Justice
- Stand for our Nation
And so much more.
Scripture is filled with testimony after testimony of how God fights on behalf of His people to bring about victory.
- Moses
- Joshua
- Gideon – too many, too many
- Shammah-
- Jehoshaphat
- David
- Plus Many More.
Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 4:6)
Remember, it is the Lord who brings about victory!
And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” Exodus 14:13-14

Episode #98 ~ Kairos vs. Chronos Time ~ Habakkuk 2
with Amie Rogers
The prophetic movement has been experiencing some obvious struggles lately. This is bringing a re-alignment with and within the prophetic movement at this time. Habakkuk 2 gives us a little glimpse into what exactly the “prophet” and prophetic voices are supposed to do. We often hear about writing the vision and making it plain, but what about the verse before and after that? Habakkuk explains we are to wait upon the Lord, watch, and see what He is doing. Amie and I also dive into how this “waiting, watching and seeing” is all about understanding the Chronos time vs the Kairos time of God. The ancient Greeks had two words for time: chronos and kairos. The former refers to chronological or sequential time, while the latter signifies a proper or opportune time for action.

Yes ! I love paying attention to repetition in the Bible!
Michele, repetition in Scripture happens way more than we think. <3 It's eye opening too.
There is so much power in standing firm in Him! What a great reminder!
Rebecca, you are most welcome for the reminder and YES! there is power in just standing and watching God move! I often forget just how powerful standing can be.
Just “stand” is one of the great encouraging commands of the Bible to me. It takes the pressure off to have to “do” (even though standing is still a form of doing). It forces me to rely on God’s strength, not my own. Thanks for this series, Debbie!
Dear Debbie, Tom and I came home from a prenatal test. The doctor, who we only met once, completed the procedure, very callously said, “Well, it looks like you’re going to lose this one.” And walked out the door!
Obviously, we were devastated. We went back to Mama’s to pick up our daughter, and told her (Mama) what happened. From her life experiences, and the Lord’s heart, Mama said, “Sometimes you just have to STAND there and take it.”
Our son is 38 and fights much different battles now. Thank you, Debbie, for the reminder that I may fight for him on my knees, but I can still stand in victory with the promises of God.
wow Alice! What a powerful testimony of contending, standing and watching God to what He does best. So good! thanks for sharing.
Love this. It is only in the resisting of evil and sitting still with Him that we learn more of His character and what He would have for us.
Thanks Lauren! Yes, you are so right, we must resist and sit with God so we can learn more and more about Him
There is so much in this post that I need to know and remember!
Elizabeth, there is for me too! Blessings
