The Belt of Truth

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist …

In Ephesians 6., Paul breaks down the entire Armor of God that we are to put on. The armor is not just to protect us, it is to ready us for when the day of evil comes. Paul lists seven pieces of armor in Ephesians 6, but the belt of truth is listed first for a reason. The belt of truth is a neutral piece, but it is not just an accessory.

As I wrote last week, the belt of truth is one of the most important pieces of our armor. The belt is an integral part, and is the piece that holds all the other pieces together.

When a Roman soldier began to dress for battle, the first piece he puts on is the belt. It’s the piece that MUST be first because the other pieces of armor attach to it. The belt is not pretty, exciting, or prominent for all to see, but it is necessary!

When I think of how a belt is utilized today, I view it as an afterthought or an accessory. Some may use a belt as a necessity to to keep their pants in place, but I think it’s fair to say that many of us wouldn’t see a belt as the most important piece of our wardrobe.

If a Roman soldier wore the belt wrong or didn’t wear one at all then it could lead to the soldier’s downfall in battle.

Paul shows the importance of the belt and takes it one step further when he tells us, it is not just a belt, but rather, it is the belt of TRUTH.

When engaging in spiritual warfare, the truth matters. Not our truth, not the truth according to our feelings, not my truth, not your truth, but God’s truth. Truth is a description of facts and reality.  Facts can be examined; the effects of facts can be debated but the facts are the facts.  One political commentator is known for saying, “the facts don’t care about your feelings.”

Truth refers to a state of genuineness and is an integral part of integrity. Integrity speaks of our character and character matters. Scripture is not just filled with truth. The Word of God IS the TRUTH!

The Bible tells us:

The truth of the Gospel leads to Freedom.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32 NIV).

The truth of the Gospel is the path to God.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).

The truth is sanctifying.

Scripture tells us that we are to be in the world but not of it. We have been sanctified, chosen and set apart.

They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth (John 17:16-19)

The truth of the Word of God is to equip us for good works

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come (John 16:13).

The truth moves us to action.

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore, put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves (James 1:19-22).

We are called to know the truth, speak the truth, live the truth, and stand in the truth!  Paul urges us to stand in times of trouble and to prepare ourselves for when the “day of evil” comes. When you put on your armor, make sure you don’t forget the belt of truth.

Stand firm with the belt of truth firmly in place. Stand firm on the knowledge of the truth of the Gospel and the salvation of Jesus Christ. Stand firm with the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. He (Holy Spirit) will lead you into all truth. He will reveal and show you the knowledge of the truth, the truth of the Gospel and truth that comes from the Holy Spirit

Words have power.

To encourage. To comfort. To strengthen. To heal.

Especially when they come from God.

The Gift of Prophetic Encouragement Bible Study: Living a Lifestyle of Encouragement shows us how to follow Jesus by loving on and building up His church … one person, and one God-centered word, at a time.
