The Breastplate of Righteousness

(Ephesians 6:13-14)

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place …

This week we dive into the second piece of armor Paul talks about in Ephesians 6 and the Armor of God. The breastplate is another vital piece of armor. It is a defensive piece that is designed to protect major organs. The breastplate is direct protection for the heart and lungs not to mention many other important organs. Without the breastplate, a soldier when attacked, could easily die because there was not a protective barrier surrounding these vital organs.

The breastplate was the heaviest piece of weaponry a Roman soldier wore. It weighed around 40 pounds. Some Bible Commentators say that Goliath’s breastplate weighed around 125 pounds!  The breastplate depending on the period of history was elaborately ornate and beautiful. It was often made of bronze or brass and although beautiful, it was designed to withstand attack and forceful blows of swinging swords and flying arrows. When a soldier secured the breastplate in place with the belt, it removed any hesitation or tentativeness to be able to engage in battle. Today our modern-day soldiers don’t wear breastplates made of iron or steal, but rather, bullet proof vests. Most military vests and body armor are made of Kevlar, steel and Polyethylene. Kevlar and PE are mainly used to make soft body armor, while steel and ceramic are used to make hard body armor.[1]

The belt of truth securely holds the breastplate of righteousness in its proper place and position so it can be the most effective in covering and protecting what lies beneath. Truth and righteousness go together, and both are needed.

What is righteousness?

My tongue shall speak of Your word, for all Your commandments are righteousness (Psalm 119:172).

To be righteous is to do what is right in God’s eyes. God’s commandments are righteousness. In contrast, lawlessness is sin, and sin is the opposite of righteousness. So, to be righteous is to obey God’s laws of love.

Psalm 106:3 says, “How blessed are those who keep justice, who practice righteousness at all times!”

Simply put, for us to be righteous means we obey God’s commandments and live in such a way that is honorable to Him. The thing that gets in the way of us walking in righteousness is sin. Sin is and has always been an issue. From the beginning of Genesis all the way through the Scriptures sin is present and the people of God have a choice and decision to turn from their sin and instead turn to God

Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; … (1 Corinthians 15:3a).

Unfortunately, our sinful nature can get in the way of living an upright life. When we decide to live based on our own desires rather than God’s, we make decisions that are harmful to ourselves and others.

Romans 8:6 says, “So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians also talks about the breastplate being made of faith and love.

I Thessalonians 5:8 says, “But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.”

How do we put righteousness on?

We put on the breastplate of righteousness by being in the word of God. When need to get a head knowledge and a heart knowledge of God’s Word and implement what it teaches. When trials or temptation come our way, and they will, we can make decisions and choices that are grounded and founded in God’s Word.

How do we use righteousness?

Since the breastplate is designed to protect our vital organs including our heart, let’s look to see what the Word of God says. In Proverbs 4:23, Scripture tells us to guard our hearts because it is the wellspring of life. We are to protect our hearts from the devil’s schemes, lies and temptations. Righteousness helps us resist temptation and resist the devil.

James 4:7 says, resist the devil and he will flee.

We truly can stand and resist the devil with the armor of God firmly in place. Having the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness help us know that we are fully protected and covered giving us a confidence to stand our ground fully equipped and ready for battle as we wait for God’s instructions and watch Him move on our behalf.
