“Mooooom!” my young son screamed in the middle of the night after awakening from yet another nightmare. I frantically ran stumbling into his room after being jarred awake from his terrified scream.
He was still crying, but I was finally able to calm him down when he realized it wasn’t real and he wasn’t in the dream being terrorized anymore.
“Do you want me to pray before you go back to sleep,” I asked?
He nodded his head yes, and said, “but make sure to pray for the helmet of salvation too. I think we forgot to do it before.”
He was probably right, our nightly routine to help him sleep nightmare free had been to pray for the helmet of salvation to be firmly in place while he was sleeping.
When we said our evening prayers, I started having him take the steps to pick up and place his invisible spiritual helmet of salvation on his head. It served as a reminder to him that his mind was protected by God as he slept.
Why was it important? It was important, because of the role the helmet of salvation is in our spiritual armor.
The Helmet of Salvation
Ephesians 6:17 take the helmet of salvation and …
What is the helmet of Salvation and why is it so important?
When a soldier would suit up for battle, the helmet was the last piece of armor to go on. It was the final act of readiness in preparation for combat. A helmet was vital for survival, protecting the brain, the command station for the rest of the body is essential. If the head was badly damaged, the rest of the armor would be of little use.
A Roman soldier’s helmet was ornate and flamboyant. It was a piece of art as much as it was a weapon. It was not just a highly decorative piece of metal that covered the head, it also covered the cheeks and jawbone.
It was commonly made of bronze or sometimes silver. It was extremely heavy and strong so it could not be easily penetrated, and it could withstand a blow from a hammer or even a battle ax. The Roman soldier’s enemy’s carried battle-axes and when used, heads would roll. If you had no helmet, you would lose your head.
Helmets are a very noticeable part of armor and as already stated, are designed to protect our minds. As such, the helmet of Salvation – is to be noticed by other people. Our salvation – is to be noticed by other people. Just as a soldiers helmet was ornate and unique to him, so is ours. God has created us each uniquely with different gifts, skills, and abilities. Our Salvation, our testimony of being saved and coming into the kingdom is uniquely different from others.
Rick Renner says: When a person is confident of his salvation – and when he is walking in the powerful reality of all that salvation means for him – that person is noticeable.
The Battlefield of your Mind
If the helmet of salvation isn’t worn or is not secured tightly in place then your mind is easily susceptible to the lies and deceptions of the devil. Ephesians 6:11 tells us to, “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
Your mind is the control center for your life. The things you think, say, and feel come from your heart and your mind.
Let me be clear about how important your mind is. Scripture says that the enemy comes to kill, to steal, and to destroy. Many times, he will assault us on the battleground of our minds. Satan spews lies, slander, allegations, and accusations at us. He is the great deceiver, and he loves to play mind games with us. Just look at what satan did back in the garden with Eve. He approached her and asked a question, “Did God really say?” This question caused Eve to doubt God. Paul even talks about how satan tries to outwit us, especially if we are not aware of his schemes. (see 2 Corinthians 2:11)
Strongholds
The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ (2 Cor 10:4-5 NIV).
What is a stronghold?
The word stronghold comes from Greek word ochuroma which means fortress or prison.
A fortress is meant to keep things out and a prison is meant to keep things in.
A fortress is a fortified place meant to keep intruders and outsiders out and those who are inside the fortress safe. A prison is meant to keep things inside captive or in captivity. A prison serves as the opposite of a fortress since it is mean to keep people from getting out.
Fortress vs Prison
It’s important to note that the word stronghold has two meanings. When we are talking about the enemy and spiritual warfare. Sometimes we have strongholds: walls or fortress that have been built emotionally or mentally to keep people out. But, they can also serve to keep people from getting too close, and also, at the same time, it can keep us in prison/bondage.
There is a war being waged in the battlefield of our minds. We must take control of our logical mind and submit them to be obedient to Christ. Logic often will work against our spiritual life unless it is submitted to the Holy Spirit. So, when we are told to “take” the helmet of salvation, the word “take” literally means to receive salvation.
How do we protect our mind and get the helmet tightly in place?
- Read the Word of God
- Study and know the Word of God
- (Joshua 1:8 meditate on it)
- Spend Time with God
- Understand & Know what the Word of God says about Your Identity in Christ
- Understand ALL that salvation has to offer
- Know beyond a shadow of a doubt what Jesus death and resurrection purchased for us!
As we meditate on the word of God and allow it to fully work in our lives our minds will be renewed and we can receive all the benefits that salvation brings to us, allowing us to be secure in God. When we are secure in God the schemes, lies, and accusations of the enemy will no longer be able to penetrate our minds/thoughts with doubt or unbelief!

Episode #95 Choose This Day
A line has been drawn, which side are you on? In this episode, we discuss how God has not called us to be “political people” but rather “spiritual people.” We must choose if we are going to look to man or God. Are we willing to set aside our likes and dislikes and looking through our own lenses for the lens of the Bible? God requires us to LOVE one another. Love does not demand silence or complete agreement. Love requires forgiveness and acceptance. Love requires truth and respect. Love is putting others first. Love is dying to self and choosing to turn to God and trust Him in everything.
