Pray in the Spirit ~ The Lance of Prayer

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. (Ephesians 6:18)

I think we can all agree, PRAYER is a powerful weapon. But how exactly does it fit into spiritual armor that a real soldier would utilize in battle?

Maybe you too have thought this same thing as you read the entirety of Ephesians 6 and Paul’s charge to “put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes.” Many Roman soldiers would not have seen prayer as weapon to be used on the battlefield. So which piece of the Roman soldier’s armor could Paul be equating to prayer?

We have the loin-belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.  But Paul doesn’t end there.  He adds one more piece, a weapon of prayer.

During my research it is interesting to note that Roman soldiers actually had seven pieces of armor, not just the six that Paul laid out in Scripture.  A Soldier actually carried one more piece of weaponry with them, it was called a lance. The lance was a strategic weapon in the soldiers armor.

Many Bible commentators mention Paul’s list of armor as being incomplete because he left out the lance.  But did Paul really leave it out?  I think not.

In fact, as I was reading Rick Renner’s book, Dressed to Kill, he came to the same conclusion.  Let me share it in his own words, Rick says:

“I concluded that although the lance is not specifically mentioned by name in these verses, it has to be in this text; otherwise, we do not have the whole armor of God.”

Rick goes on to explain that Paul did include the lance in the spiritual equipment, he just called it praying in the Spirit. Rick calls it the “lance of prayer and supplication.”

As a weapon, the lance came in a variety of sizes. Long for throwing at your enemy to take him out at a distance and shorter lances were used to thrust into your enemy at close range. The Roman soldiers carried both long and short lances. Prayer is and can be used in much the same way. God has given us prayer as a weapon of warfare to forcibly, thrust, wield, or throw in our enemy’s direction.

The kind of lance the Roman army used at the time Paul would have written this passage of scripture is called a pilum.  It was about six-feet long of solid iron with an iron lance head at the top. This type of lance was used mainly for throwing at the enemy.  Rather than wait for the enemy to get in close proximity to attack, the Romans would engage them at a distance. By doing so, they took out many of their enemy striking them to the ground before they were able to get near the Roman’s camp.

I don’t know about you, but I would much rather take my enemy out at a distance instead of allowing him to get in close range.  The Scripture reveals many types of prayers we can pray. Some types of prayer are, prayers of: thanksgiving, supplication, faith, petition, authority, intercession, and more.  Plus, we are told to pray in the Spirit, but what exactly does that mean?

Praying in the Spirit simply means that we ask the Holy Spirit to give us the words to pray. It also means we allow the Spirit to fill us, lead us, and guide us in truth. We allow the Holy Spirit to empower us and our words as we pray, giving our words authority and power in the name of Jesus. When we pray in the Spirit, we are partnering together in prayer that reaches into the heavenly throne room of God.

“But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit” (Jude 1:20).

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (Romans 8:26).

More and more these days with the current state of our nation, I find myself praying in the Spirit continually. I am utilizing the lance of intercession, repentance and thanksgiving.

What type of “Prayer Lance” have you found yourself using to pray lately?

  • Thanksgiving
  • Supplication
  • Faith
  • Petition
  • Authority
  • Intercession
  • Repentance

Is there another type of prayer you would like to add to the list above?

Episode #97 Yet, I Will Rejoice~ Habakkuk 3

Habakkuk  asked the same questions that many of us have asked God today. His story provides great insight into how we can choose joy even when things look bleak. God desires us to have new eyes, ears and hinds’ feet. God desires for us to walk with Him in freedom and joy, even if the world is falling apart around us. Habbakuk’s praise was not contingent on circumstances, no matter how dismal they appear to be. … “yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”  Habakkuk rested his faith in God’s character and not the state of the world around him. He responded with triumph, gladness and fear.
