In the TV series, Madame Secretary, the phrase, “I serve at the pleasure of the President” is heard many times. This idea caught my attention because we also serve at the pleasure of Jesus. Jesus calls us to make disciples and minister to His people. We are people submitted to the authority of Jesus. In Matthew 8:8-10 we see a centurion come to Jesus and describe the working of authority and submission. In doing so he acknowledges Jesus’ authority. By extension if Jesus calls me, his disciple, to go to somewhere and do something, then I am privileged to do it.
As a group of prophetic people (a people who hear and respond to God), serving at the pleasure of Jesus and following in His example of sacrifice – our calling is much higher than only delivering a word. Jesus not only delivered the message of salvation, but He actively interposed himself between God and our sin to the point of brutal death on the cross.
#Intercession can be simply described as being God’s presence on someone else’s behalf. Share on X
Prophetic intercession is the next level of prophetic growth for some people reading this post. Intercession can be simply described as being God’s presence on someone else’s behalf. The prophetic intercessor seeks to humble him/herself on behalf of the receivers of the prophecy – it should look like Jesus interposing himself for our sake. Prophets serve at the privilege of Jesus, and have privilege of prostrating themselves before Jesus on behalf of other people. In doing so we get ourselves out of the way and cry out to God to make His word come to pass.
- Put yourself in the presence of God for people (even rebellious ones or ones you dislike)
When Moses showed up in camp with the ten commandments he found the people worshipping a golden calf. Moses looked at the tablets and looked that people and just completely lost his cool. After a killing spree where 3000 are killed, Moses returns to God and argues that God should not wipe them out – and God relented. Later in verses 31-32 Moses confesses their sin and says, “But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.” Moses leverages his relationship with God on behalf of the people. This is a picture of Moses interposing himself between God and the rebellious people. Jesus is the one who ultimately interposed his blood between God and man. This is our calling too.
- Be willing to do what Jesus asks.
To paint a picture for the people, Isaiah was obedient to walk about naked for 3 years. Hosea was asked to marry a prostitute who would betray his love to demonstrate the faithfulness of God to a betraying people. God remained faithful to the people but the people betrayed him just as Gomer betrayed Hosea. Sometimes we have more in common with Gomer than Hosea. I doubt very much that God will ask you to go to such extremes but our mindset must be one of humble compassion for God’s people. This means that sometimes our stewardship of a prophetic word may involve intense times of prayer. If you want lead the people of God then get low, get humble, get on your face and interpose your faith on behalf of the lost, struggling, and rebellious – because we are all struggling and rebellious.
If you want #lead the people of God then get low, get humble, get on your face before Him. Share on X
- Don’t become complacent or proud
As we adopt changes in our lives (sanctification) that where we have victory over sin, more maturity, or a deeper understanding of God there is a risk. The risk is that we let our own journey slip from our minds and we begin to think that we have improved our own position; when in fact we are recipients of God’s grace. We might begin to feel snuggled up to God and somehow better than those who don’t yet walk in the same maturity. It’s a complacent pride that we may not even recognize. Nevertheless, we should not believe that , but by God’s grace, that we are worthy to deliver a message that contains a list of wrongs/sins/ grievances. Imperfect messengers (like us) take advantage of the same grace as everyone else. Therefore, those saved by grace should be the ones to distribute the most grace.
Be intercessors who serve at the pleasure of #Jesus to intercede for His people. Share on X
No one is exempt from the need of a savior. We should all be willing to place ourselves in a circle and pray fervently for revival within the circle. It is our daily discipline to present ourselves to God but we are unable except by his grace. We are powerless without a fresh overcoming of the Holy Spirit, but we present ourselves to God nonetheless, knowing that he gives grace freely and abundantly. And in that moment where grace dissolves our sin we see His face and shares his heart with us.
In these tender moments we are in the perfect place to be intercessors who serve at the pleasure of Jesus to intercede for His people. Faithful stewardship is required for those who serve at the pleasure of the King.

Have you had the opportunity to read my new book “The Gift of Prophetic Encouragement: Hearing the Words of God for others.” ? This book is about learning to hear the voice of God in our own life so we can respond to those God bumps and little nudges He gives us on a daily basis. God is calling us to be agents of encouragement and to be the gift the worlds needs today.
We live in a time, where those around us are in desperate need of a real encounter with Jesus and in need of encouragement. We are called to encourage one another daily (Hebrews 3:13), and to build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11). My book will teach you how to step out and do just that.
To order your copy today: You can find it at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, OR your favorite online retailer, Plus, newly added, you can now get a signed copy from me. Click Here to order yours today!

John,
Thanks for sharing here today. Yes, we must demonstrate humble compassion to others and we need to rid ourselves of complacent pride before we are able to be intercessors on behalf of others. Falling prostrate before the Lord is a good place to start.
Blessings,
Bev
Bev – I so agree with you – falling before the Lord on our face is a great place to start… In fact, it’s the best place to start.
Recently I remembered how much I enjoy praying for people. I know that sounds weird, but it had been awhile since I had interceded for and prayed with a friend. It was such a blessing to remember.
Rebecca, I don’t think it’s that weird. I think sometimes we go through seasons of not doing what we had previously done and then when we step back into it again, we realize how much enjoyment we had. Thank you for sharing.
Blessings to you both in your bi-vocational ministry! I didn’t realize that was also part of your story, and it’s wonderful that you are serving God in this unique way.
Thank you Michele. Yes, it has been a part of our story for the last 6+ years as senior leaders. It is definitely a unique part of our story. 🙂
We serve at the pleasure of Jesus. I love this thought. laurensparks.net
That was one of my favorite lines too Lauren. Thanks for taking the time to read.
Such beautiful words. I am always praying for other people. It makes me feel more connected with the human race.
Praying for others is a great way to feel more connected. Thanks for being here Patrick.
