A few weeks ago, as I was scrolling through Facebook, one of my friends had a video on her timeline and a compelling essay written by her grandson on the importance of how we see ourselves. It was titled, “I AM.” It was about how our words, thoughts and the things we think can define how we see ourselves and others see us.
This is so very true, and I teach something very similar to this in my classes. At first, when read the title of the essay, I thought maybe the video that followed would be one of those “I am second” videos, but it was not. It’s posted below if you want to take the time to watch it. It is powerful and makes an impact. But these words from Rock Thomas and the entirety of the video are exactly what we all need to think about. I don’t know if Mr. Thomas is a believer, but he does understand a profound kingdom principle.
Did you catch that? What words follow “I am …” in your life?
Are they:
- I am smart.
- I am stupid.
- I am worthless.
- I am valuable.
- I am weak.
- I am strong.
- I am fearful
- I am courageous.
- I am a quitter.
- I am an overcomer.
- I am defeated.
- I am victorious.
The words that follow “I am” are very important indeed. Those words do define how we see ourselves, and who we believe ourselves to be. Sometimes others say them to us, and then we begin to say them to ourselves. Sometimes life’s circumstances make us feel certain things are true and so we speak them out. James 3:1-12 tells us to be careful what words we speak for they will direct our life.
Some have been walking around with a negative view of themselves with tapes playing over and over in our minds. But the word of God says, that we are God’s people. We are Chosen by Him. We are loved, and He has good plans for us. That is why Romans 12:2 tells us to renew our minds and fill them with the truths of God.
Here is a great way to help us renew our minds and replace untruth with the truth.
Write on several 3×5 cards the words:
I AM CHOSEN BY GOD FOR A PURPOSE!
Now, post these 3×5 cards everywhere in your home, car, and workspace. However, don’t just read the words, speak them out loud over and over again until it gets past your head and into your heart.
Maybe you already know you are chosen by God for a purpose, so what is the Spiritual Truth that needs to follow “I AM…” for you?
Let’s grab our Bibles and begin to write out Scriptural truths about who we are and who God says we are. When God looks at us, what does He see? What does He say? How would God’s word want us to complete the I am statements?
Take a minute and ask God: What is the truth I need to hear right now?
Maybe it is:
I am the apple of God’s eye.
Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings (Psalm 17:8 ESV).
I am courageous. OR I am strong.
Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV).
I am a child of God.
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:14-15 ESV).
What are the words that you would choose today to follow “I am…” ?

So, so true, Debbie. Thank you for this reminder. I am walking through therapy for PTSD and it is unearthing the untruths that have been crippling me so long. It is so beautiful then to look that in the face and then say- but God says, I am …” God bless you for encouraging us all.
Oh Anna, I am so glad to give the reminder and I am so sorry to hear you are walking through PTSD. I am so grateful you are able to get the help you need to walk in freedom and to unearth the untruths. I will be praying for you beautiful lady! And yes, I agree – I use the BUT GOD.. statement a lot. Blessings to you 🙂 thanks for being here today and sharing where you are at.
Scripture is so clear on this: God’s heart toward us is all for good and His calling is good. Trusting for grace to speak good words about it to my own heart.
You are correct Michele, Scripture is very clear. I pray that you get more than enough grace and an abundance of good words to speak over and directly to your heart! Thanks for being here.
Words are very powerful things for good or evil, death or life!
We do need to keep a constant focus on His Words for us everyday.
Thankyou for the reminder!
Jennifer
Jennifer – yes words are powerful…. life or death, good or evil, blessings or curses… we get to choose so I completely agree with you – focus on God’s Word and His truths is the only way to go! Blessings and you are welcome for the reminder.
I am going to write those words down on a piece of papers and say them aloud each day. I AM CHOSEN BY GOD FOR A PURPOSE! Then at the end of next week maybe I will be ready to answer the question. Thank you!!!!
Maree – You are most welcome! I am so glad that you will be writing the words down and saying them aloud. It’s powerful and you will begin to see change in your thoughts and attitudes and I believe by the end of next week that you will indeed have an answer to the questions.
I AM … I’m going to practice this today. I know this: YOU & JOHN ARE LOVED BY US!!! (xo)
I am so very glad you will be practicing this today. 🙂 and THANK YOU for loving us, we love you guys too! xoxo
I never watch videos but something hooked me and I watched. That was powerful. I can relate to the unsupportive environment as a child and doing the hard so that things can be easy. And yes the words that follow I am as we describe ourselves follow us. Powerful!!!
Nylse, I totally get not watching videos, I rarely do as well, and if I do, I usually don’t watch them all the way to the end, or I fast forward… but that 10 year old boys essay compelled me to watch it and I am glad I did. It is powerful.. Thank you for commenting today and I am glad that you enjoyed the video. 🙂 Blessings
Food for thought. Thank you kindly for letting us share. Have a blessed day!
you are most welcome Jas – and thanks for being here and always sharing such amazing things.
Thank you for these great words of truth today. It’s so important to ask God to show us how HE sees us! And then He can wash away the lies that we so often have hidden down inside. His grace is so great to us! Blessings to you!
You are welcome Bettie. I agree, we all need God’s perspective on how He see’s us, because we rarely have clear and true understanding, and those lies we believe can taint us. May God show you the truth you need to day to wash away any lies. Blessings
Doing exactly what you said… reminding ourselves of truth… is what it takes to replace the lies of the enemy. It’s a daily choice of who we will believe! Thanks for the post!
You are welcome for the post and YES, you are so right – it’s a daily choice and act to replace the lies of the enemy, but when we do, the results are powerful. Blessings
