A few weeks ago, as I was scrolling through Facebook, one of my friends had a video on her timeline and a compelling essay written by her grandson on the importance of how we see ourselves.  It was titled, “I AM.”  It was about how our words, thoughts and the things we think can define how we see ourselves and others see us.

This is so very true, and I teach something very similar to this in my classes.   At first, when read the title of the essay, I thought maybe the video that followed would be one of those “I am second” videos, but it was not.  It’s posted below if you want to take the time to watch it.  It is powerful and makes an impact.  But these words from Rock Thomas and the entirety of the video are exactly what we all need to think about.  I don’t know if Mr. Thomas is a believer, but he does understand a profound kingdom principle.

Did you catch that?  What words follow “I am …” in your life?

Are they:

  • I am smart.
  • I am stupid.
  • I am worthless.
  • I am valuable.
  • I am weak.
  • I am strong.
  • I am fearful
  • I am courageous.
  • I am a quitter.
  • I am an overcomer.
  • I am defeated.
  • I am victorious.

The words that follow “I am” are very important indeed.  Those words do define how we see ourselves, and who we believe ourselves to be.  Sometimes others say them to us, and then we begin to say them to ourselves.  Sometimes life’s circumstances make us feel certain things are true and so we speak them out.  James 3:1-12 tells us to be careful what words we speak for they will direct our life.

Some have been walking around with a negative view of themselves with tapes playing over and over in our minds.   But the word of God says, that we are God’s people.  We are Chosen by Him.  We are loved, and He has good plans for us.  That is why Romans 12:2 tells us to renew our minds and fill them with the truths of God.

Here is a great way to help us renew our minds and replace untruth with the truth.

Write on several 3×5 cards the words:

I AM CHOSEN BY GOD FOR A PURPOSE!

Now, post these 3×5 cards everywhere in your home, car, and workspace.  However, don’t just read the words, speak them out loud over and over again until it gets past your head and into your heart.

Maybe you already know you are chosen by God for a purpose, so what is the Spiritual Truth that needs to follow “I AM…” for you?

Let’s grab our Bibles and begin to write out Scriptural truths about who we are and who God says we are.  When God looks at us, what does He see?  What does He say? How would God’s word want us to complete the I am statements?

Take a minute and ask God: What is the truth I need to hear right now?

Maybe it is:

I am the apple of God’s eye.

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings (Psalm 17:8 ESV).

I am courageous.  OR  I am strong.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NIV).

I am a child of God.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:14-15 ESV).

What are the words that you would choose today to follow “I am…” ?
