Welcome!

Thank you for joining me each week as we continue our journey through Psalms 23. It is one of the most well-known Scriptures. Many quote it or recite it by wrote, but have we taken the time to dive into the depth and richness found in these six short verses? Do we know what it means to live and be a Psalm 23 people?

If you have missed previous posts on Psalm 23, you can find them here:

Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me (Psalm 23:4 NIV).

As a young kid sitting in children’s church, I never quite fully understood many of the stories and scriptures they would read and teach.  Psalms 23 was one I memorized and learned to recite at a young age. Sure, some of it brought me comfort, but not all of it.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4 NASB).

First, why would God ask me to walk through dark valleys? And not just dark valleys but the valley of the shadow of death?  I mean in the verse just prior to this, He is leading us on the right paths as He refreshes our soul.  Next how would one not be afraid of something evil? And finally, one of the things I couldn’t wrap my head around was why in the world would a shepherd’s rod and staff bring comfort?

Having lived and experienced some life since then, I look back at my much younger naïve self and chuckle.

In life there will be times we may walk down some dark, lonely paths. Paths that can seem like we might die. There will also be times when we may be fearful about what lies ahead or lurks around the next bend. But we must remember, we are not walking alone. Not only are we not alone, but the person we are walking with is caring a big stick and His job is to protect us from the predators who seek to devour, kill, and destroy us.

As a shepherd boy, David would have carried both a rod and a staff to protect his sheep. The “rod” was a short, thick, heavy stick that was worn around the shepherd’s belt.  The staff was a longer, lightweight pole with a curved end called a “crook”.  The shepherd used the staff to guide, move, count, and examine the sheep.  The crook was used to help pull a sheep to safety when it might have been stuck out of reach of the shepherd or was stuck in a bog.

Even when your path takes me through
the valley of deepest darkness,
fear will never conquer me, for you already have!
Your authority is my strength and my peace.
The comfort of your love takes away my fear.
I’ll never be lonely, for you are near (Psalm 23:4 TPT).

Sometimes the path that God has us on, does lead through some deep dark places, but we need not fear. These dark valleys are the place when we should feel comfort and peace as we press into God. This past year and then some with all we have faced as a nation and the world, there has been some deep darkness. Fear has been running rampant and many may feel as if they are stuck in a valley of darkness. However, we need to remind ourselves we are not in the valley of darkness alone – God is with us. Not only is He with us but He is also close by our side.

Even when I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
protect and comfort me (Psalm 23:4 NLT).

Valley lows and mountain top highs are a part of life. I wish the path was always straight with no hinderances, but that is not the case.

It’s in the dark valley that we face and conquer our fears.

It’s in the valley seasons that we learn to trust and be at peace.

The valley is where we learn where our strength comes from and where we learn to overcome our fear and walk in love.

The valleys of darkness are where we learn to not retreat but to keep moving forward.

It’s in the dark valley where it may seem or “feel” we are all alone, but it’s where we learn God is always with us.

The valleys are where we learn about God’s comfort and protection.

Even in the unending shadows of death’s darkness,
I am not overcome by fear.
Because You are with me in those dark moments,
near with Your protection and guidance,
I am comforted. (Psalm 23:4 The Voice )

Many lessons can be learned from walking through the Valley of Darkness.

Do you find yourself there now?

OR

Have you just walked out of one?

Take a moment. Take a deep breath and remember: You are not alone.  Do not fear, but trust in the Lord.

Also, remember, we can learn from one another. What is one thing you have learned from walking in the dark valley seasons?
