We Are Family

Dreamers Series

It was the summer of 1979 and my family was camping with some of our cousins.  We had made friends with kids from a neighboring campsite and we were exploring and on one of our adventures when what would become our theme song for the week came on the radio in a campsite nearby. 🎶 We are family, I’ve got all my sisters with me….” 🎶 We danced around and sang at the top of our lungs, looking at each other in the eye as we sang. We are family!

The truth was, we weren’t all family, our skin tones could attest to it, but we wanted to be and felt like we were.  Some of us only had that one week together, and we never see each other again. Others of us were family, with all the ups and downs that went with it. We couldn’t escape being family.

Joseph and his brothers couldn’t escape being family either.  They were stuck with each other, for better or for worse.  Joseph even reminded them that all they did to him was part of God’s bigger plan to save their family line.

God sent me here ahead of you to makes sure you and your families survive this terrible ordeal and have a remnant left of earth (Genesis 45:7 The Voice).

Joseph longed to see his entire family reunited even in spite of all the pain they caused him.  He was about to have his dream come true and so was his father Jacob. When the brothers returned to their father with news that Joseph was alive and well in Egypt, Jacob was stunned.  Upon hearing all about his favored son, he determined to go see him before he died so he set out for Egypt.

I think there must have been some hesitation and fear in Jacob about leaving his land, because when he came to Beersheba, he made sacrifices and the Lord spoke to him in a vision during the night (Gen 46:2)

I am the True God, the God of your father. Don’t be afraid to go down to Egypt and leave the land I promised you, for I am going to make you into a great nation there. I will go down with you to Egypt, and one day I will be the One to bring you back again. And something else—Joseph’s own hands will be the ones to close your eyes at the time of your death (Genesis 46:3-4 The Voice).

I can only imagine the excitement and hurry he must have felt but also relief.  Jacob was living in the promise land – the land God lead his ancestor too and the land that had been passed down through generations.  Can you imagine leaving a place that had been in your family for generations?  However, God in His faithfulness has a plan and brings Jacob to a place of peace regarding leaving.  Sometimes we may have to leave a place of promise to receive the fullness of the promise.

When Joseph first saw his brothers, he would not have been singing this song, but after their interactions and his family was reunited, I can image him dancing and singing as he went to see Pharaoh.

🎶 We are family, I’ve got all my brothers with me! 🎶

So Joseph went to Pharaoh.

Joseph (to Pharaoh): My father and brothers have arrived from the land of Canaan with their flocks and herds and the rest of their belongings. They are now waiting in the land of Goshen (Genesis 47:1 The Voice).

Joseph had a plan for his family living in Egypt, which no doubt God had given him. Because the favor of God rests upon Joseph it also attracts Pharaohs favor.  Joseph is in a position to not just care for his family, but to provide the best for them.

Pharaoh (to Joseph): Your father and brothers have come to you for help. You have the entire land of Egypt at your disposal. Settle your family in the best areas of the land. Let them live in Goshen, and if you know of any who are particularly good at what they do, then put them in charge of my livestock (Genesis 47:5-6 The Voice).

The favor of #God also attracts the #favor of man. Click To Tweet

Joseph’s rejection by his brothers, was actually for his protection and theirs. God is a family man and He wanted the best for Jacob and all his sons.

God’s plan was to get Joseph to Egypt to save the entire nation which was also a fulfillment of His promise to Abraham.  God always has a plan for us, even if we don’t see it in the moment, we must remember, we are His family.  Just as God fulfilled His promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, He will be faithful to fulfill His promises to you!
